- Colour: natural wood colours lead the 2027 outlook (61% of surveyed wood flooring businesses expect demand to rise), and lighter tones follow (47%). Grey is the colour most expected to fall: 75% expect less demand for it.

What the 2027 outlook survey actually measured
The survey figures on this page come from the National Wood Flooring Association's annual Industry Outlook, published in its magazine on October 1, 2026. It asked member businesses (contractors, distributors, manufacturers and retailers) which trends they expect to gain or lose demand next year. Keep two cautions in mind: it is an industry-wide survey of wood flooring businesses, not a Toronto study, and it measures what the trade expects, not what any single buyer should choose.

Read together, the list describes a calmer, wood-forward floor: oak that looks like oak, longer and wider boards, and a low-sheen surface. It does not rate trends for vinyl or laminate, so we use it as a guide to the look and then check which of our floors in every material deliver it.
In-stock colour families across our four floor types
A product name is not a colour sample, but it is the first clue a shopper gets. Read across our SPC, laminate, engineered and solid listings and the warm and light words (natural, sand, honey, white, cream) come up more often than grey and greige ones, which is where the outlook points. Model numbers, common on the laminates, say nothing about colour, so confirm the tone in a photo or a sample.
The four floors further down cover that spread: natural oak and toasted caramel at the warm end, Grey Oak in the middle, and a cool blue-grey stain on the maple. That spread matters because the survey ranks grey lowest for demand, so a warm or neutral pick carries less style risk than a cool one.

Plank widths you can buy now, by material
Width is the second big signal. Our engineered hardwood collection lists 67 floors today, and the 7.5" Villa oak used below sits at the wide end of the look the survey describes. Solid hardwood works the other way: the Lauzon maple below is a 4¼" strip, chosen for that classic narrow look.

Villa: natural European oak in long, wide boards
Villa lines up with the size items in the survey: wire-brushed, character-grade European oak in a 7.5" width. Its product page lists a 3mm wear layer of real European oak and describes the length as "70% Full Length at 1900mm", which speaks to the longer-board trend. It is 3/4" thick and sells at $83.31 for 19.42 sq ft, or $4.29/sq ft.
Toasted Caramel SPC: the warm wood look in a waterproof plank
Toasted Caramel covers the warm end of the same look in vinyl. It is a 10mm SPC plank with a 20mil wear layer that the catalogue rates commercial or heavy duty, and the planks click together rather than being nailed or glued. The product title lists an attached EVA pad, so no separate underlay is needed, and the catalogue lists the floor as waterproof, which suits a kitchen, laundry room or basement. At $38.89 for 11.82 sq ft it lands at $3.29/sq ft.
Swiss Krono Grey Oak: a wide board for a tight budget
This German-made 10mm laminate carries an AC5 rating, and its product page lists the board at 190mm x 1380mm. At $42.83 for 17.22 sq ft, it is $2.49/sq ft, below the other three examples. The caveat is colour: grey is the tone the survey expects to decline most. Pick it if grey suits your cabinets and you want a wide board at a low price, not as a bet on the coming look.
Lauzon Sapphir: Canadian solid maple with a cool stain
Lauzon's Essential Hard Maple in Sapphir is made in Canada, is 4¼" wide, and its product page describes "a cool-toned, blue-grey stain". As a narrow solid strip in a cool colour, it sits outside the outlook's main direction. Buy it for solid Canadian maple, which the same page says "can also be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifetime", at $99.80 per 17.0 sq ft box or $5.87/sq ft. Stock is the real constraint: we had 14 boxes when prices were checked, enough for 238 sq ft.
2027 paint colours and the floor that sits under them
Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams have both announced green colours of the year for 2027. Benjamin Moore's pick is Webster Green HC-130, which the company calls "a quintessential green that bridges timeless design with contemporary aesthetics". Sherwin-Williams chose Celery SW 6421, "an airy, herbal green that embodies fresh perspectives and elegance". Either one settles the wall colour, and the floor has to live with it.
A paint choice does not decide the floor, but it changes what a floor sample looks like once the wall is painted. Take a painted board home and set it against the samples you are considering in the light of the actual room, and hold a warm wood tone and a cooler one side by side before you commit.

Should you buy flooring now or wait for 2027?
We do not forecast our own prices. What the outlook does report is the direction manufacturers expect: 68% of NWFA manufacturers surveyed raised prices in 2026, and 60% expect further increases in 2027. That is a survey of wood flooring makers, so it is a signal rather than a promise about any product, but it does not support waiting for prices to fall.
Stock is the other half of the decision. The floor you choose has to be available for your full area plus the 5% waste allowance we add to every quote. Here is what 500 sq ft (525 sq ft with waste) needs in each of the four floors, material only:

The formula is boxes = 525 ÷ sq ft per box, rounded up to a whole box, then boxes × box price. Add 13% HST to the material line. Installation, removal, underlay, trim and delivery are not included here; we confirm those in your quote. Villa and the laminate could each cover that area several times over today, the Toasted Caramel planks had enough boxes on hand for it, and Sapphir would need 31 boxes against 14 on hand, so a larger Sapphir job depends on further stock that we would confirm first.
Buy now when:
- your install date is fixed and the floor you want is in stock for your full area plus 5%;
- you have chosen a look that matches the survey's direction (natural or lighter wood tones, wider and longer boards), so the style risk is low;
- you want to plan around a known box price rather than a future one.
Waiting makes more sense when:
- your project is months away and you have not seen samples in your own light;
- you are still torn between two colour families, such as grey and warm oak;
- the room layout is still open, so the square footage may change.

Is engineered hardwood or vinyl more in style for 2027?
The survey covers wood, and 45% of respondents expect factory-finished engineered flooring to grow. It does not rank vinyl. One practical split is engineered oak on the main floor and a similar wood-look SPC where water is a risk.
How much extra flooring should I order if I buy early?
Plan on the 5% waste allowance and round up to whole boxes. For 500 sq ft of Villa, that is 28 boxes for $2,332.68 before tax. Keeping a few spare boxes from the same order is useful for future repairs.
