If you have been searching for 9 inch vinyl plank flooring, here is the short version for our Toronto range: our SPC planks come in two widths, 5.9" and 7.09", and nothing wider is listed. This guide treats width as the decision. It shows what the extra 1.19" does to the number of plank rows in a room, why box coverage and price follow thickness more than width, and which width suits which room, using live prices from our vinyl flooring collection.
Quick answer: 5.9" or 7.09" for your room?
- Widths we carry: 5.9" planks on 39 listings (34 in stock) and 7.09" planks on 30 listings (28 in stock), going by the width written in each product title.
- Price: the two width groups overlap heavily in price per square foot. Thickness, which sets the coverage of each box, moves the price more than width does.
- Room size: choose 7.09" for open, wide rooms where you want fewer plank lines. Choose 5.9" for a slimmer board in narrower rooms and halls, or when the colour you like is only made in that width.
- Wider than 7.09": not stocked in vinyl, so a 9 or 10 inch plank is outside our current range.
What an extra 1.19" does inside a room
Plank width decides how many board edges your eye crosses from one wall to the other. To count them, divide the room's width in inches by the plank width and round up, which includes the cut row against the wall. Here is that count for three room widths.
| Room width | Rows of 5.9" planks | Rows of 7.09" planks | Rows saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft (96 inches) | 17 | 14 | 3 |
| 12 ft (144 inches) | 25 | 21 | 4 |
| 20 ft (240 inches) | 41 | 34 | 7 |
Fewer rows means fewer long seams running the length of the floor, which is the usual reason for choosing wider planks in big open rooms. In a small room the saving is only a few rows, so colour and grain tend to matter more than width.
Width versus price: what the live catalogue shows
It is easy to assume that a wider plank costs more. The current catalogue says otherwise, because each width is sold in several thickness lines and the thickness line sets the box price and the coverage. This table shows in-stock examples for each combination, with width taken from the product title.
| Width | Thickness | Example colour | Box price and coverage | Price per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5.9" | 8mm | Natural Sandy Oak | $59.00 per 15.77 sq ft box | $3.74 |
| 5.9" | 9mm | Sandstone Oak | $62.00 per 13.79 sq ft box | $4.50 |
| 5.9" | 10mm | Stone Grey Oak | $59.00 per 11.82 sq ft box | $4.99 |
| 7.09" | 6mm | Blonde Sand Oak | $62.93 per 23.64 sq ft box | $2.66 |
| 7.09" | 9mm | Misty Grey Oak | $62.00 per 14.18 sq ft box | $4.37 |
| 7.09" | 10mm | Greige Mist | $59.00 per 11.82 sq ft box | $4.99 |
Prices checked October 4, 2026. Box prices and coverage come from our current catalogue.
Across everything in stock, the 5.9" group runs from $3.74 to $5.08 per sq ft and the 7.09" group from $2.66 to $4.37. Three patterns sit behind those ranges:
- Same thickness, similar price. At 9mm the 7.09" plank is $4.37 per sq ft against $4.50 for the 5.9", a gap of $0.13 in the wider plank's favour. At 10mm both widths cost $59.00 for an 11.82 sq ft box.
- Thickness sets the coverage. A 6mm box holds 23.64 sq ft, which is double the 11.82 sq ft in a 10mm box. Box prices look close, so compare price per square foot instead. Our 6mm, 8mm and 10mm comparison covers what the extra thickness does for feel and sound.
- Wear layer follows the product line. The 9mm Sandstone Oak lists a 12mil wear layer and the 9mm Misty Grey Oak lists 20mil, so the cheaper wide plank also has the thicker wear layer. The details are in our guide to wear layers and click systems.
Four planks, two widths
These four products show how the width and thickness combinations look in practice. For the wider picture on the Riche line, see our guide to SPC vinyl plank flooring brands in Toronto.
Sandstone Oak: 5.9" wide, 9mm
Riche Sandstone Oak is our 5.9" example. It is a click-lock plank with an EVA pad included, a 12mil wear layer and a waterproof listing, at $62.00 per 13.79 sq ft box, or $4.50 per sq ft.
Misty Grey Oak: 7.09" wide, 9mm
Riche Misty Grey Oak has the same $62.00 box price as Sandstone Oak and 0.39 sq ft more floor in each box, at 14.18 sq ft. That works out to $4.37 per sq ft. It is also click-lock, comes with an EVA pad, lists a 20mil wear layer and is listed as waterproof.
Greige Mist: 7.09" wide, 10mm
The Ultra-Thick Greige Mist plank is $59.00 per 11.82 sq ft box, or $4.99 per sq ft, with a 20mil wear layer and click-lock installation. Its title leaves the width out, but the spec line on its product page reads 7.09" wide, so it sits in the wider group at the same price as the narrower 10mm planks.
Blonde Sand Oak: 7.09" wide, 6mm
Riche Blonde Sand Oak is the thinnest of the four, with an IXPE pad and a 12mil wear layer. At $62.93 for a 23.64 sq ft box it comes to $2.66 per sq ft, the bottom of the 7.09" range, and it also belongs to our white oak collection.
Which width for which room
| Your situation | Width to lean toward | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open-plan main floor or living room about 12 ft wide or more | 7.09" | Four fewer rows at 12 ft and seven fewer at 20 ft, so the floor reads as larger boards. |
| Small bedroom, hall, bathroom or laundry about 8 ft wide | Either | The difference is only 3 rows, so choose by colour, thickness and price. |
| Tight material budget | 7.09" in 6mm | $2.66 per sq ft is where the 7.09" range starts. Check that 6mm suits the room before you commit. |
| Thicker plank wanted | Either, in 10mm | Both widths are $4.99 per sq ft in our 10mm lines. |
Colour often settles the question before width does. If the shade you want is sold in one width only, take that one and keep the room-size rule as a tiebreaker.
How width and thickness change the box count
Box coverage varies by product line rather than following a width rule. The 9mm lines hold 13.79 sq ft at 5.9" and 14.18 sq ft at 7.09", while the 10mm lines hold the same 11.82 sq ft in both widths. So run the arithmetic on the exact product. Our quote method is to multiply the floor area by 1.05 for the 5% waste allowance, divide by the sq ft per box, round up to whole boxes, then multiply by the box price.
Here is a 12 ft by 14 ft room, which is 168 sq ft, or 176.4 sq ft after waste. The figures cover material only, before HST.
| Plank | Width | Box coverage | Boxes needed | Material |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sandstone Oak, 9mm | 5.9" | 13.79 sq ft | 13 | $806.00 |
| Misty Grey Oak, 9mm | 7.09" | 14.18 sq ft | 13 | $806.00 |
| Greige Mist, 10mm | 7.09" | 11.82 sq ft | 15 | $885.00 |
| Blonde Sand Oak, 6mm | 7.09" | 23.64 sq ft | 8 | $503.44 |
Boxes are sold whole, so the two 9mm planks land on the same 13 boxes and $806.00 even though one is $0.13 cheaper per sq ft. Installation, removal, trim and delivery are not in this table; those are quoted for your room.
White oak looks in both widths
Shoppers who search for a white oak wide plank are usually after a pale, natural oak tone rather than a particular size. Our white oak vinyl plank collection lists 13 products: 5 at 5.9" and 8 at 7.09", going by their titles. Arctic White Oak at 8mm and Frost White Oak at 10mm are in the narrower group, and Blonde Sand Oak and Nordic Breeze Oak are in the wider one.
That lets you pick the tone first and the width second. If the floor is for a kitchen or a main-floor renovation, our waterproof LVP guide for kitchens and main floors covers the other specs worth checking.
Looking for a 9 inch or 10 inch plank?
None of our SPC listings is wider than 7.09". All 95 give their width as either 5.9" or 7.09", in the title or in the spec lines on the product page, so a 9 inch or 10 inch vinyl plank is not something this range offers today.
Two labelling points can trip people up. Some listings leave the width out of the title, so read the spec lines on the product page. The width filter on our collection pages also shows 6 1/2" or 7 1/2" for some planks, which does not match the 5.9" and 7.09" in the titles and spec lines. Go by the title and spec lines, and ask us if a listing looks unclear.
Wide-plank vinyl FAQ
Do you sell vinyl planks wider than 7.09"?
No. The widest planks in our vinyl range are 7.09", with the rest at 5.9". Send us the look you want through the quote page and we will point you to the closest match we stock.
Do wider vinyl planks cost more per square foot?
Not on their own. The 7.09" group starts at $2.66 and tops out at $4.37 per sq ft, while the 5.9" group starts at $3.74 and tops out at $5.08. Thickness, which changes how much floor each box covers, explains most of the difference between products.
Is 5.9" or 7.09" better for a small room?
Either works. In an 8 ft wide room, the wider plank only saves 3 rows, so pick the colour and thickness you like and let the width follow.
Which width comes in white oak colours?
Both. Our white oak vinyl plank collection has 5 products at 5.9" and 8 at 7.09", so you can choose the width that suits the room.
Why does the width filter on a collection page differ from the product title?
The filter reads 6 1/2" or 7 1/2" for some planks, while the title and spec lines say 5.9" or 7.09". The title and spec lines are the ones to trust when you plan a layout.
