Both floors are waterproof click-lock vinyl planks with a rigid core and a foam pad bonded to the back, so the joint and the water question do not separate them. Choose Riche SPC from our vinyl flooring collection for a posted box price, a printed wear layer and a thicker, stiffer plank you can order today. Choose Torlys RigidWood Firm for the longest plank here, the widest open run either brand states, and a price that comes from your Torlys dealer.
Torlys states the Firm plank is 4.5mm thick with its 1mm IXPE layer counted inside that figure, checked October 17, 2026, which leaves about 3.5mm of plank above the foam. Our Riche planks run from a 6mm box to a 10mm box, pad included. Over a slab with small dips the thicker plank is the more forgiving one, and over flat plywood a thin plank with a soft pad is comfortable for much less.
Torlys RigidWood Firm or Riche SPC: the two at a glance
| Plank | Thickness as stated | Bonded pad | Wear layer | Price per sq ft | How you buy it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Torlys RigidWood Firm, Elite and Premier | 4.5mm, with the 1mm IXPE layer counted inside | 1mm IXPE | Ask your Torlys dealer | From your Torlys dealer | Through a Torlys dealer, who prices it by room |
| Riche 6mm line | 6mm, pad attached | IXPE | 12 mil | $1.89 | Posted box price, $44.68 per box |
| Riche 9mm 12 mil line | 9mm, pad attached | EVA | 12 mil | $2.39 | Posted box price, $32.96 per box |
| Riche 9mm 20 mil line | 9mm, pad attached | EVA | 20 mil | $2.49 | Posted box price, $35.31 per box |
| Riche 10mm 20 mil line | 10mm, pad attached | EVA | 20 mil | $3.29 | Posted box price, $38.89 per box |
Prices checked October 17, 2026. The Riche figures are our posted box prices. Torlys lists the RigidWood Firm construction, checked October 17, 2026, and sells through its own dealers rather than posting prices, so a Torlys price comes from a Torlys dealer.
Thin core or thick core: 4.5mm against 6mm, 9mm and 10mm
Each plank is a rigid stone core, a printed wood layer, a clear wear layer and a foam pad, and the headline number adds all four together.
A thicker core bridges a shallow dip or a slight crown in the slab better, so its joints are less likely to show a shadow line as the floor heats and cools.
The thin plank sits lower, which helps where the new floor meets existing tile or hardwood, and it costs much less.
What does the attached IXPE or EVA pad do for you?
Both brands bond the pad to the back of the plank at the factory, so there is no underlayment roll to buy, carry or cut. Our 6mm Riche planks and the Torlys Firm board use IXPE, a fine closed-cell foam, while the 9mm and 10mm Riche planks use EVA, a denser foam that feels firmer underfoot.
The pad is what softens the room. In a basement rec room or a condo living room it takes the hollow click off a plank laid over concrete, which matters more over a hard slab than over wood. A pad does not level a floor, though, because foam compresses and follows the surface beneath it.
We also do not roll out a second underlayment under a plank that already has a pad, because a soft extra layer lets the planks move more than the click lock likes. Our guide to underlayment for SPC vinyl covers when a separate layer helps.
Long planks: do they matter in a large open room?
Torlys gives the Firm Elite plank as 7 inches wide and 58-3/4 inches long, and the Firm Premier plank as 47-3/4 inches long, and states that its Smart Core with the Uniclic joint allows a transition-free installation in spaces up to 70 feet by 70 feet. In a wide open basement, that is the figure that decides whether a T-moulding lands in the middle of the room.
Plank length also does quiet work in a big room. Every plank end is one more joint for the eye to catch, so a 58-3/4 inch plank leaves fewer end joints per row than a short board.
Our Riche planks are click-lock with the pad bonded, and each box carries a set coverage: one box of the 6mm plank covers 23.64 sq ft against 11.82 sq ft for the 10mm plank. That coverage drives the box count on a large floor, and for a long open run we plan the transitions on the quote. Our note on staggering planks and H-joints explains the layout rule.
Wear layer: 12 mil or 20 mil?
The wear layer is the clear layer over the printed wood and takes the abrasion from grit, shoes and pet claws. It is separate from core thickness, so a thick plank with a thin layer wears no better than a thin plank with the same layer.
Our 12 mil Riche planks are the residential layer and the 20 mil planks are the heavy-duty layer. In the 9mm core, stepping from 12 mil to 20 mil costs 10 cents more per square foot, from $2.39 to $2.49, and the 10mm 20 mil plank is $3.29 per square foot.
In practice, 12 mil suits a bedroom or a spare room, and the extra for 20 mil is worth it in a kitchen, a front hall, a busy living room or a home with a dog. What we cannot put beside that is a mil figure for the Torlys board, because Torlys describes the Firm surface as scratch and wear resistant and dent resistant rather than giving a number, so ask your Torlys dealer for it. Our wear layer guide goes through it room by room.
Posted box price or a Torlys dealer: how you buy each floor?
Riche is easy to price here. The box price is posted and the coverage per box is fixed, so we can price your rooms today. The lines above run from $1.89 to $3.29 per square foot, from a $32.96 box to a $44.68 box.
Torlys sells through its own dealer network, so a Firm price comes from your Torlys dealer rather than a shelf tag. Have the collection, the colour and the quantity your rooms need ready, and expect a little more time than a posted box price.
Either way, the measurements are the same. Send the room sizes in square feet, the building type, meaning a house, a basement or a condo, and what is on the floor now, and we measure, add waste and count whole boxes, so our Riche figure lines up with the Torlys figure your dealer gives you.
What a 500 sq ft room costs in material
Take a 500 sq ft open living and dining area. We add 5% for cuts and ends, which takes the order to 525 sq ft of material, then divide by the coverage of one box and round up to the next whole box.
| Plank | Box price | One box covers | Boxes for 525 sq ft | Material |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Riche Moonlight Oak, 6mm with IXPE pad | $44.68 | 23.64 sq ft | 23 | $1,027.64 |
| Riche Coastal Grey, 9mm with 12 mil layer | $32.96 | 13.79 sq ft | 39 | $1,285.44 |
| Riche Nordic Breeze Oak, 9mm with 20 mil layer | $35.31 | 14.18 sq ft | 38 | $1,341.78 |
| Riche Frost White Oak, 10mm with 20 mil layer | $38.89 | 11.82 sq ft | 45 | $1,750.05 |
Of these four lines, the 6mm plank comes in at the smallest figure per square foot and the lightest load, because one box covers more than twice the floor of a 10mm box. Buying thicker costs twice over: a higher price per square foot and more boxes for the same room. There is no Torlys row, because a Firm price comes from a Torlys dealer rather than from us, and installation, removal and trim are priced after we see the floor.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the Riche 6mm line if you want the smallest material figure of the planks compared here, at $1.89 per sq ft, the floor sits over flat plywood, and the thin profile helps at a doorway.
- Choose a Riche 9mm or 10mm line if the room sits over a slab with small dips, the floor is going into a basement, or you want the more solid feel underfoot.
- Choose a 20 mil Riche plank if the floor takes real traffic, such as a kitchen, a front hall or a living room with a dog, at $2.49 or $3.29 per sq ft.
- Choose Torlys RigidWood Firm if you have one long open area and want the longest plank and the widest transition-free run, and you are happy to buy through a Torlys dealer.
The prep decides the result more than any of these numbers: a flat, clean, dry subfloor makes a modest plank look good.
Torlys RigidWood Firm or Riche SPC: questions buyers ask
Is Torlys RigidWood Firm thinner than Riche SPC?
Yes, on the figures each brand gives. Torlys gives the Firm plank as 4.5mm with its 1mm IXPE layer counted inside that number, which leaves about 3.5mm of plank above the foam, against 6mm, 9mm and 10mm on our Riche planks.
Do I still need an underlayment with either floor?
No. Both brands bond the pad to the plank at the factory, so the floor goes down as one layer over a flat, clean subfloor. A second soft layer under a click joint can stress the lock.
How many boxes does my room need?
Multiply your area by 1.05, divide by the coverage of one box, then round up to the next whole box. A 500 sq ft room becomes 525 sq ft of material: 23 boxes of the 6mm plank, 39 of the 9mm 12 mil plank, 38 of the 9mm 20 mil plank and 45 of the 10mm plank.
Where does a Torlys RigidWood Firm price come from?
From a Torlys dealer. Torlys sells through its dealer network and does not post prices, so the dealer prices the collection, the colour and the quantity your rooms need.
Which of the two suits a basement better?
Over a prepared slab, a thicker Riche plank is more forgiving of small dips and the bonded pad keeps the room quieter underfoot. Torlys Firm suits a long run you want without a transition in the middle.
