Stair nosing is the trim piece that decides whether a click vinyl or laminate staircase looks finished or improvised. The right piece comes from the same manufacturer as your floor, is long enough to cover two treads on a typical stair, and is fixed to the stair rather than floated over it. The nosing pieces in our stair nosing collection are sold per piece instead of per square foot: the Riche PVC nosings are $35.00 each, so a 13-step run takes about $245.00 of nosing material. What follows is how to pick the profile, and what each step costs before installation.
Quick answer: what nosing a click vinyl stair needs
Three things narrow the choice: the maker and colour of your floor, the fixing method that floor allows, and the length of each piece against the width of your stairs. Get those right and the trim becomes the simplest line in the job.
Colour comes first. A nosing built for your floor's own collection repeats the same surface and print, so the stair reads as a continuation of the floor. A random profile in a similar colour tends to show at the nose of every tread, the first place anyone looks. Each of the five SPC colours in the table below has a PVC nosing in the same colour name, all at $35.00 a piece.
Fixing is where vinyl and laminate split. Shaw's laminate molding instructions have the stair treads and risers fully adhered to the stair with a Shaw-approved multipurpose flooring adhesive, after which the stairnose is carried in a molding track and screwed or nailed through its face.
Johnson Hardwood's SPC and vinyl molding manual takes the opposite position on fasteners. It asks for a high-quality urethane and/or MS polymer adhesive, has the installer glue the nosing once it fits tightly in place without any gaps, and states that the stair nose, tread and riser pieces are not to be mechanically fastened with nails, brads, pins or staples, with one exception: a pilot-drilled hole for a hand-driven finish nail. On a vinyl stair the main fixing is adhesive, not a nail gun, so stair nosing for vinyl plank is a different part from the laminate version, even when the colours look alike.
Quick-Step solves the same problem with a system part: the Incizo profile, plus an aluminium subprofile for stairs that is ordered separately and replaces the plastic rail that ships in the pack.
Matching nosing to your floor colour
The five Riche SPC colours in the table each share a name with a PVC nosing. The floor figure below is the box price divided by the coverage in the box, so the floor and the trim can be compared on one line.
| Floor colour | Box price and coverage | Price per sq ft | Matching nosing | Nosing price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Riche Charcoal Noir SPC | $33.91 per 15.77 sq ft box | $2.15 | Riche Charcoal Noir Stair Nosing, 2400 x 110 mm | $35.00 |
| Riche Driftwood Grey Oak, Pale Parchment Oak or Dark Espresso Oak SPC | $42.33 per 21.27 sq ft box | $1.99 | Riche PVC Stair Nosing in the same colour name | $35.00 |
| Riche Anthracite Oak SPC | $38.89 per 11.82 sq ft box | $3.29 | Riche PVC Stair Nosing, Anthracite Oak | $35.00 |
Prices checked October 23, 2026. Box prices and box coverage come from our current catalogue.
The piece price does not follow the floor price. Charcoal Noir runs $2.15 per sq ft while Anthracite Oak runs $3.29, and both take the same $35.00 nosing. Three of the five floors share one price, and the Driftwood Grey Oak stair nosing costs the same $35.00 as the rest, so the trim line does not move between them. On a 13-step run the floor moves the budget; the nosing line stays flat. Our stair nosing collection lists 52 nosing profiles in total.
If you want a stair built to your house rather than assembled from a list, custom stair matching covers that route. For the wider decisions around treads, risers and stair safety, our whole-staircase guide goes through the options.
How much nosing a 13-step staircase takes
Work from the piece length instead of guessing. One Riche nosing is 2,400 mm long and 110 mm across the profile. On a stair 36 inches wide, two nosings of 36 inches use 72 inches of that length, so a single piece covers two treads. A third cut would need 108 inches and does not fit.
- Steps in the run: 13 (the example used here).
- Nosings per piece: 2, on a stair 36 inches wide.
- Pieces to order: 13 divided by 2 is 6.5, rounded up to 7.
- Nosing material: 7 pieces at $35.00 is $245.00.
- Per step: $245.00 divided by 13 is $18.85.
The dividing line is 1,200 mm. A stair that width or narrower gives two nosings per piece; anything wider gives one. A stair 48 inches wide is over that line, so the same 13 steps need 13 pieces and $455.00 in nosing.
Round up rather than squeeze a short piece out of the offcut. Seven pieces give 14 cuts for 13 treads, so there is one spare 36 inches for a step that is not square.
Nosing, a Riche tread, or a paint-grade tread
Three routes cover most stair jobs, and they separate once you price the material.
| Route | Piece | Price each | 13 steps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the tread, clad it with plank, nosing on the front edge | Riche PVC stair nosing, 2,400 mm | $35.00 | $245.00 |
| New Riche tread with a nosing on every step | Riche stair tread, 920 x 266 mm | $62.00 | $1,051.00 |
| Paint-grade tread | Top Floorings Depot MDF stair tread in Honey, Bourbon or Wild Berry | $25.66 | $333.58 |
| Wood tread finished on site | Top Floorings Depot red oak stair tread, unfinished | $28.32 | $368.16 |
Row two adds the tread and the nosing together: 13 treads at $62.00 is $806.00, plus 7 pieces of nosing at $245.00, for $1,051.00. The 920 mm width in the tread title covers a stair 36 inches wide with a few millimetres to trim.
The MDF and oak routes suit stairs that will be painted or finished as wood rather than matched to the vinyl. Thirteen MDF treads come to $333.58 and thirteen unfinished red oak treads to $368.16, and our MDF stair tread in Honey is the piece behind that first figure.
Our unfinished red oak treads cover the hardwood side, in three versions: 36 by 10 inches at $24.99, 42 by 10 1/2 inches at $28.32 with a plain end, and the same length at $31.86 with a left open end. The tone then comes from the finish you apply. The nosing pieces priced here are PVC parts made for Riche vinyl floors. For a hardwood staircase, the stair nosing collection also has red oak and jatoba stair noses, and the tone comes from the finish you apply.
Whether a ready-made tread already carries a nosing edge is something we check against your stair when we quote.
How the pieces are fastened on a laminate stair and on a vinyl stair
Shaw's laminate instructions use a molding track. The track is glued, screwed or nailed to the tread, the stairnose is pushed into it from left to right, and screws or nails through the face then secure it, placed 2 inches from the end and 6 to 8 inches apart. The riser piece goes in under the nosing before those fasteners are driven.
Johnson Hardwood's vinyl manual goes the other way: no nails, brads, pins or staples through the components unless the hole is pilot-drilled first, and a full spread of adhesive on the riser rather than a few beads from a caulking gun, because the riser is then better secured to the rough stair.
Quick-Step's Incizo stairnose sits on an aluminium subprofile for stairs, ordered separately, and the technical sheet says not to use the plastic rail included in the Incizo packaging. Three manufacturers, three fixing methods, which is why the nosing has to come from the same system as the floor.
What we need to price your stairs
Stair work is not in the per-square-foot floor rate. Nosing and stair installation are priced after viewing, because the time depends on how the stair is built, how the tread and riser are finished, and how many pieces have to be cut. Send photos with your first message and we can price from those, or book a visit where the stair needs one.
For a quote, have these ready:
- the number of steps in the run, and the width of one tread
- a photo of the stair edge, straight on and from the side
- the floor product or colour you are matching, or the sample name
- whether the existing treads stay or come out
- whether the stair has an open end on the left or the right
- for a condo or a shared stair, your building's own rules
If your building has rules about common stairs or about what goes on a floor above another suite, check them before you order; our condo flooring guide explains how those rules usually work. Stairs down to a basement bring a moisture question with them too, and LVP for basement stairs covers what to check before the pieces are ordered.
Questions about stair nosing and treads
Do vinyl plank and laminate stairs use the same nosing?
No. The fixing differs rather than the colour: laminate nosings sit in a molding track and are fastened through the face, while vinyl nosings are glued to the stair. Match the piece to the floor system, not to the colour alone.
Does the nosing have to match my floor colour exactly?
Where the floor has its own nosing, use it. Each of the five colours above has one, at $35.00 a piece. If your floor has no matching piece, pick the closest tone and repeat it on every step, or make the difference deliberate with a painted MDF tread or a wood tread.
How many nosing pieces do I need for my stairs?
Divide the number of steps by two when the stair is 1,200 mm wide or less, then round up. Thirteen steps need 7 pieces, and wider stairs need one piece per step. Order the extra length rather than cutting into a short offcut.
What does stair nosing cost per step?
About $18.85 per step on the 13-step example, from 7 pieces at $35.00. Add the tread if you are replacing it: a Riche tread takes that to $80.85 per step before installation.
Can I keep my existing treads and just add nosing?
Yes, when the treads are sound and flat, since the nosing is there to cover the front edge where the plank stops. If the tread surface is worn or the stair creaks, a new tread at $62.00 or an MDF tread at $25.66 is the simpler repair.
Do you install the nosing as well as supply it?
We install stair nosing and stair parts as part of a stair job, and that work is priced after viewing rather than at a fixed per-step rate. The material figures here are the parts only.
