Riche sells three different 8mm SPC vinyl plank lines at our store, and they differ in two specs and one price gap. The Heavy-Duty line has a 20mil wear layer and costs $3.56 per sq ft. The Montreal Collection and the 5.9" EVA series both have a 12mil wear layer and start at $3.74 per sq ft. This Riche heavy duty SPC review stays inside the 8mm class and builds every number from the live listings in our 8mm SPC vinyl plank collection. If you want every Riche thickness side by side instead, our complete Riche collections guide covers the whole range.

Quick answer: which Riche 8mm line fits your floor?

  • Heavy-Duty (20mil): choose it for the rooms that take the hardest daily use. A $59.00 box covers 16.55 sq ft, which also brings its price down per square foot.
  • Montreal Collection (12mil, 5.9" plank): a short list of four colours, all in stock, for rooms where a thinner wear layer is enough.
  • 5.9" EVA series (12mil): ten colours with the same wear layer and plank width as Montreal, at $3.74 to $4.00 per sq ft depending on the colour.

Per sq ft, the Heavy-Duty planks run $0.18 under Montreal and the $59.00 EVA colours, and they carry the thicker wear layer. The trade-off is plank width: the Heavy-Duty plank is wider, so pick it only if you like that look in your room.

The three 8mm lines side by side

Every row below is an 8mm click-lock SPC plank listed as waterproof in its product record. The per-square-foot figure is the box price divided by the coverage in each box.

Line Colours In stock Wear layer Plank width Box price Coverage per box Price per sq ft
Heavy-Duty 10 10 of 10 20mil 7.09" $59.00 16.55 sq ft $3.56
Montreal Collection 4 4 of 4 12mil 5.9" $59.00 15.77 sq ft $3.74
5.9" EVA series 10 7 of 10 12mil 5.9" $59.00 to $63.08 15.77 sq ft $3.74 to $4.00

Prices checked October 4, 2026. Box prices and coverage come from our current catalogue.

The 5.9" width is the one printed in the product titles of the Montreal and EVA lines. The Heavy-Duty titles do not state a width, so the 7.09" figure comes from the plank size listed on the Heavy-Duty product pages.

What stays the same across all three lines

Before looking at the differences, it helps to know what you are not choosing between. Each product page gives the build as 8mm in total: a 6mm SPC core plus a 2mm EVA pad. All three lines are listed with click-lock installation and a 48" plank length. Their product pages also show the same sound rating, IIC 73 / STC 72, so acoustics will not separate one line from another.

That leaves three real decision points: the wear layer, the plank width and the box coverage. The sections below take them in turn.

What a 20mil wear layer changes against 12mil

The wear layer is the clear coat on top of the plank, and it is where the lines split. The Heavy-Duty pages list 20mil (0.5mm), while the Montreal and EVA pages list 12mil (0.3mm). Inside our catalogue the 20mil products carry the durability label "20mil - Commercial / Heavy Duty" and the 12mil products carry "12mil - Residential", which is how the store describes the intended use.

Take Driftwood Mist as the reference Heavy-Duty colour. It is $59.00 for a 16.55 sq ft box, which works out to $3.56 per sq ft.

You might expect a thicker wear layer to cost more, so the price order here is worth a second look. Montreal and the $59.00 EVA colours cost $3.74 per sq ft at the same $59.00 box price, because each box holds 15.77 sq ft instead of 16.55 sq ft. That is 0.78 sq ft less flooring for the same money. On paper the 20mil line is the stronger buy and the natural pick for hard-use rooms, while the 12mil lines are where you go for a narrower plank.

Neither listing promises how many years a floor will last, and we do not either. Wear layer thickness is a spec you can compare. Lifespan depends on the room, the traffic and the care the floor gets.

Plank width: 7.09" Heavy-Duty against 5.9" Montreal and EVA

The width difference is larger than it sounds. In a room 12 ft wide, which is 144 inches, a 5.9" plank gives roughly 24 rows across the room, and a 7.09" plank gives roughly 20. That is about four fewer rows to lay and four fewer long seams to line up with the wider plank.

The Montreal product page describes its narrower plank as one that creates a sense of length and openness in a room. That is the store's own page wording, and it is a look preference rather than a performance spec. If you are matching an existing floor or a trim line, compare the plank widths before you order, because the three lines share a length but not a width.

Montreal Collection or the 5.9" EVA series?

These two lines match on the specs that matter for wear: 12mil, 5.9" wide, and 15.77 sq ft per box. The Montreal Collection has four colours, all in stock, at $3.74 per sq ft. Saint-Laurent Honey is one of the four, and it costs $59.00 per box.

The EVA series is the bigger colour range. Ten colours are listed and seven are in stock today. Six of those seven are $59.00 per box, and Silver Mist Oak is $63.08 per box, or $4.00 per sq ft, which makes it the top of the range. The product titles in this series state the pad outright: "8mm Waterproof with EVA Pad". Arctic White Oak sits at the base price of $3.74 per sq ft.

So the decision between these two is about colour and stock, not performance. If one of the four Montreal colours is what you want, the price is the same as the EVA series at its base. If you want something outside those four, the EVA series is where the other shades sit. The Montreal product pages describe their images as CGI renders, so treat the colours on screen as approximate.

What the boxes cost for 500 and 1,000 sq ft

Boxes are sold whole, so the line you pick changes how many you buy as well as the price of each. We add a 5% waste allowance to the area, divide by the coverage per box and round up. The same method is behind the quotes we write.

Floor area With 5% waste Heavy-Duty at $59.00 a box Montreal or $59.00 EVA colour Difference
500 sq ft 525 sq ft 32 boxes = $1,888.00 34 boxes = $2,006.00 $118.00
1,000 sq ft 1,050 sq ft 64 boxes = $3,776.00 67 boxes = $3,953.00 $177.00

These totals are material only, before HST, delivery and installation. The boxes work like this: 525 sq ft divided by 16.55 sq ft is 31.7, so you buy 32 Heavy-Duty boxes, and 525 divided by 15.77 is 33.3, so you buy 34 of the 15.77 sq ft boxes.

The gap is two extra boxes at 500 sq ft and three extra at 1,000 sq ft. It grows with the area, but it moves in steps of one box price.

How to tell the lines apart from a product title

The three lines name themselves differently, which helps when you are scrolling the collection. Heavy-Duty titles start with "Riche Flooring Heavy-Duty 8mm SPC Vinyl Plank" and end with "(20mil Wear Layer)". Montreal titles include "Montreal Collection" and state the 5.9" plank at the end. EVA series titles include the phrase "8mm Waterproof with EVA Pad" followed by the 5.9" width. Once you know those three patterns, the title alone tells you the wear layer or the width, and the coverage per box on the listing tells you how many boxes to count.

Choosing by room: basements, condos and busy living areas

Start with how hard the room is used. A hallway, a kitchen or a family room with pets and kids is where the 20mil Heavy-Duty line makes sense, and Linen Fields is another colour in that line at the same $3.56 per sq ft. A guest bedroom or a low-traffic office is where 12mil planks do the job, at a slightly higher price per sq ft.

For a basement, all three lines are listed as waterproof, but the subfloor and moisture questions are a separate topic. Our basement LVP guide covers the basement-specific specs: wear layer, core and underlayment.

For a condo, the shared sound rating means the listing alone will not tell you which line a building prefers. Each building sets its own flooring rules, so check yours before you order and keep the building's written requirements handy when you ask us about a line.

For the wider category, our guide to SPC vinyl plank brands covers more than the 8mm class. Before you place an order, run through this short list:

  1. Measure each room and add the 5% waste allowance.
  2. Divide by the coverage per box for your line and round up to whole boxes.
  3. Ask us to confirm that your colour is in stock for the full quantity.
  4. Confirm the underlay point for Heavy-Duty and Montreal planks.
  5. Check your building's rules if the floor is going into a condo.

Riche 8mm SPC FAQ

Is 8mm vinyl flooring good?

It depends on what you are comparing. On these three lines the 8mm figure counts a 2mm pad, so a better comparison is the wear layer, 20mil or 12mil, and the plank width. Our SPC thickness comparison guide looks at thickness on its own.

What counts as heavy duty vinyl flooring in your catalogue?

The products we label that way are the ones with a 20mil wear layer. Their listing details read "Commercial / Heavy Duty", while the 12mil products read "Residential". The Heavy-Duty 8mm line is ten colours, and all ten are in stock today.

Do these planks need a separate underlay?

The EVA series titles say the planks come with an EVA pad, so a separate underlay is not part of that purchase. The Montreal and Heavy-Duty titles do not mention the pad even though their pages list a 2mm EVA pad. Ask us to confirm the underlay point for your project before you decide to skip it.

Are Riche and Richie the same brand?

Yes. Every product in these three lines lists Riche Flooring as the vendor, even where the product address spells the name "richie". You will find the same planks whichever spelling you search.

How many boxes of 8mm SPC do I need for a 12 x 14 ft room?

That room is 168 sq ft, or 176.4 sq ft with the 5% allowance. It takes 11 Heavy-Duty boxes, or $649.00. In Montreal or a $59.00 EVA colour it takes 12 boxes, or $708.00. Both totals are before HST.
