Found a puddle? Dog pee on hardwood floor boards, laminate or vinyl plank calls for the same first moves: blot it up with a white cloth or paper towel, wipe the spot with a damp cloth and a cleaner made for that floor, then dry it completely. Skip the steam mop; on wood, also skip vinegar, ammonia and bleach, and on vinyl, vinegar and ammonia. That routine follows the care advice quoted below and applies equally to the SPC planks in our vinyl flooring collection. What differs between floors is where the liquid goes if it sits too long. Our other pet posts help you choose a floor; this one starts after the accident.
Quick answer: what to do the moment you find the puddle
- Blot, do not rub. The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) advises blotting a stain rather than rubbing, which can damage the finish, and vinyl maker COREtec gives the same dab-and-absorb instruction for its planks.
- Wipe with the right cleaner. Use a damp, not wet, cloth with a little cleaner made for your floor: a pH-balanced wood floor cleaner on hardwood and engineered oak, a pH-neutral cleaner on vinyl plank, and the cleaner your laminate maker recommends.
- Dry the spot. Egger, the maker of the laminate featured here, recommends drying the floor after cleaning to prevent swelling.
- Test anything new in a hidden spot first, such as a closet corner.
- Leave out the home remedies. The NWFA warns that vinegar's acidic nature can damage wood floors and finishes over time, and that bleach or ammonia-based cleaners can strip the finish. Shaw Floors lists ammonia and vinegar-based products among things that can damage a luxury vinyl surface.
Caught quickly on an intact surface, that is usually the end of it. The sections below cover late finds, returning smells and floors where liquid has found a way in.
Why the same puddle behaves differently on each floor
Each floor type has a different top surface and a different weak point. The table uses products from our current range, with the specs that matter for accidents and today's prices.
| Floor and example product | Specs that matter here | Box price and coverage | Price per sq ft | Where urine can get in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solid hardwood: Appalachian Paisley White Oak | 3/4-inch solid white oak, semi-gloss finish, nail-down | $126.44 per 18.9 sq ft box | $6.69 | Through worn or scratched finish and along board edges |
| Engineered hardwood: Villa European Oak | 3/4" thick, 7.5" wide, 3mm oak top layer, wire-brushed, nail-down | $97.00 per 19.42 sq ft box | $4.99 | Into the brushed grain and the seams between boards |
| Laminate: Egger EM7206 | 8mm, 7.60" wide, AC3, click-lock | $40.48 per 21.42 sq ft box | $1.89 | Through the joints, where swelling starts |
| SPC vinyl: Riche Ultra-Thick Tobacco Oak | 10mm, 20mil wear layer, waterproof, click-lock | $59.00 per 11.82 sq ft box | $4.99 | Not through the core; liquid left standing can travel along seams and under the edges |
| SPC vinyl: Riche Heavy-Duty Driftwood Mist | 8mm, 20mil wear layer, waterproof, click-lock | $59.00 per 16.55 sq ft box | $3.56 | Same as above: seams and perimeter |
Prices checked October 6, 2026. Box prices, coverage and specs come from our current catalogue; price per sq ft is the box price divided by the coverage in one box.
Finished hardwood and engineered oak: stains, odour and the sanding question
When the finish is still intact
The NWFA's routine advice is to clean spills immediately with a dry or slightly damp cloth, and to use a cleaner made specifically for the finish on the floor. On a semi-gloss solid floor like the Appalachian white oak, a fresh accident caught quickly should wipe up cleanly. A wire-brushed engineered board like the Villa has more grooves for liquid to sit in, so give it a second pass with a barely damp cloth, then dry it.
Signs the urine went past the finish
- A dark ring or patch that stays after cleaning, often strongest at the board edges.
- Cupping. The NWFA describes cupping as edges that are raised on each board with centres lower than the edges, and links it to the floor gaining moisture.
- An odour that returns after the surface has been cleaned and has dried.
Can you sand the stain out?
Sometimes, depending on how deep the stain has gone and how much wood is left to sand. Our product page for the Appalachian Paisley describes it as solid hardwood that can be sanded and refinished multiple times. The Villa has a 3mm real oak top layer that its product page lists as sanding and refinishing capable: wood to work with, but less than a solid board. A light surface mark may sand out; a stain that runs deep, or spreads underneath, may mean replacing the affected boards. We quote sanding, refinishing and board replacement only after seeing the floor, so daylight photos help. For how the two routes compare on cost, our guide to refinishing hardwood versus replacing it in Toronto walks through the numbers.
Laminate: the joints are where trouble starts
Laminate has a sealed decorative surface, so a fresh puddle wipes off easily. Egger's own support page explains that swelling only occurs if moisture acts on the boards for an extended period, and that swelling along the edges is usually caused by moisture penetrating the joints or surface from above. So the clock matters more than the cleaner: a puddle found right away is a wipe-and-dry job, while one left overnight along a joint may leave raised edges.
Our Egger EM7206 is an 8mm click-lock board rated AC3. To remove pet urine from laminate like this:
- Wipe with a cloth that is damp rather than wet. Egger also asks owners to clean the bevels lengthwise.
- Dry the area with a clean towel straight away.
- Skip the steam cleaner. Egger allows steam only on its Aqua+ laminate and does not recommend it on its other laminate floors.
If an edge has already lifted, more cleaning will not flatten it. That is the point to ask us to look at the boards; replacing a damaged area is quoted after viewing.
SPC vinyl plank: even a waterproof core still has seams
Both Riche planks in the table carry a 20mil wear layer, and our catalogue lists each as waterproof with a click-lock installation. The seams are another matter. The product page for the Riche Heavy-Duty 8mm says its locking system gives "a tight, water-resistant seal across your entire floor", which is a different promise from a waterproof core. COREtec, whose planks are also sold as waterproof, still tells owners to remove wet spills as soon as possible. Urine left for hours has time to work along a seam towards the pad and the floor underneath.
Cleaning steps for vinyl, drawn from the COREtec and Shaw care pages:
- Dab the spill with a white cloth or paper towel, rinse the spot with a damp white cloth, then blot it dry.
- For a dried or stubborn spot, use a pH-neutral cleaner. If water and cleaner will not shift it, Shaw and COREtec both suggest rubbing alcohol on a clean white cloth, followed by a damp-cloth rinse.
- Avoid vinegar, ammonia and abrasive cleaners, and skip steam mops unless the plank's own care guide approves them.
Cat urine on vinyl plank follows the same steps; neither manufacturer's guide treats it differently. For everyday care once the accident is dealt with, see our guide to vacuum and mop choices for SPC vinyl plank.
Has the urine reached the subfloor?
This is the question behind most late-found accidents. The NWFA notes that excess water can seep into the seams and damage the wood, and that too much water on a wood floor can penetrate through seams into deeper layers. Urine behaves the same way. Signs that liquid has gone below the surface:
- Odour keeps coming back in one spot even though the surface looks and feels clean.
- Boards around the spot are cupped, raised at the edges or soft underfoot.
- Staining is darkest along the seams rather than in the middle of a board.
Surface cleaners cannot reach liquid that has soaked into a pad or a plywood subfloor, and lifting boards is how to confirm it. If you suspect pet urine in the subfloor, send us photos and a note of how long the accidents have been happening. Subfloor repair and board replacement are priced after viewing.
Prevention: nails, rugs and grip
Prevention comes down to two habits: catching accidents early and protecting the finish from claws.
- Keep nails trimmed. Shorter nails have less to dig into a finish with. Scratch repair is a separate job; our guide on removing scratches from hardwood floors covers it.
- Use runners where your dog runs. If you are wondering how to stop a dog slipping on a wood floor, rugs and runners on hallways and the route to the back door give paws something to grip. The NWFA also recommends area rugs to protect high-traffic areas.
- Check rug backings on vinyl. COREtec warns that mats with a rubber or latex backing can discolour luxury vinyl, and Shaw gives the same advice for its walk-off mats. Choose a rug pad your floor's maker approves.
- Put a washable mat under the water bowl and wipe up drips when you fill it.
- Keep a clean-up kit handy: white cloths or paper towels, the right cleaner for your floor and a dry towel.

Questions about pet urine on floors
Will vinegar get the smell of dog pee out of a wood floor?
The NWFA advises against it, saying vinegar is acidic enough to harm wood floors and their finish over time and can leave a sticky residue. Use a pH-balanced cleaner made for wood finishes instead. A smell that survives proper cleaning usually means liquid has got below the surface.
Can I use a steam mop to clean up after a pet accident?
Not on wood: the NWFA says steam mops damage the finish and the wood over long periods. Egger permits steam only on its Aqua+ laminate, and COREtec says to avoid steam on vinyl unless the maker's cleaning guidelines approve it.
How can I tell if urine has soaked into my hardwood boards?
Look for a dark mark that will not lift, board edges standing higher than the centres, and odour that returns once the floor is dry. Any one of those suggests the urine went past the finish, and photos are the quickest way to get our opinion.
If my vinyl plank is waterproof, can a pet accident wait until morning?
It should not. A waterproof core protects the plank, but the joints and the floor underneath are separate concerns, and COREtec advises wiping up wet spills promptly even on its waterproof planks.
