Best Flooring for Entryways and Mudrooms in Canadian Winters: Waterproof SPC and Tough Laminate

Wet boots, salt and grit decide what belongs at the front door. Here is how waterproof SPC vinyl and AC5 laminate compare, with current box prices and the box count for a 60 sq ft Toronto entry.

Winter reaches the front door before it reaches any other room. Boots come in wet, road salt dries into a white film, grit grinds underfoot, and the same two square feet at the threshold take the beating every time somebody walks in. The question is narrow and practical: what should go down in a Toronto entryway or mudroom so the surface still looks like a floor in March? Our answer is a waterproof SPC vinyl plank with a 20mil wear layer, and our waterproof vinyl plank collection is where those boards live. AC5 laminate earns a place too, but only where meltwater is unlikely to sit. Design-led foyer ideas are covered elsewhere; this page is about the wet-boot zone and the box maths behind it.

What holds up at a wet mudroom entryway

Here is the short version, before any measuring happens.

  • For wet boots, salt and slush: a 20mil waterproof SPC plank. Our vinyl collection lists 95 SKUs and every one carries a waterproof listing. Of those, 45 SKUs are 20mil boards (42 of them in stock today), and their material cost starts at $3.56 per sq ft.
  • For a covered porch or a dry back hall: AC5 laminate, which runs $2.39 to $3.59 per sq ft across 25 SKUs. Keep it out of the splash zone.
  • For a small entry: the box count matters more than the per-square-foot price. A 60 sq ft entry with our usual 5% waste allowance needs 63 sq ft of boards, and boxes come in whole numbers.
  • For tile: a common entryway floor, but not one in our catalogue, so this page carries no tile price.
  • For installation and delivery: both are confirmed at quote, so the figures here are materials and box maths only.

Why an entryway floor fails in winter

Two things happen at once in a Toronto January. Grit and salt crystals ride in under shoes and scour whatever surface the floor carries. At the same moment, meltwater settles along the seams and stays there until somebody wipes it up. A floor that handles both needs a thick wear surface and a product listing that says waterproof.

Wear layer is the spec to read for abrasion, and the three SPC boards below all list 20mil, which our catalogue labels Commercial / Heavy Duty. All three also come with a 2mm EVA pad pre-attached, so where the family splits is the rigid SPC core under that surface, which is thicker on Greige Oak.

Waterproof SPC vinyl: the default for a wet mudroom

The three boards below are 20mil SPC planks from our catalogue that suit an entry or a mudroom. They are sold by the box, so the last column is the box price divided by the square feet inside the box.

Product Wear layer and thickness Box price / coverage Material per sq ft
Riche Driftwood Mist 8mm SPC 20mil wear layer, 8mm thick with EVA pad $59.00 / 16.55 sq ft $3.56
Riche Linen Fields 8mm SPC 20mil wear layer, 8mm thick with EVA pad $59.00 / 16.55 sq ft $3.56
Riche Greige Oak 10mm SPC 20mil wear layer, 10mm thick with EVA pad $59.00 / 11.82 sq ft $4.99

Prices checked October 6, 2026. Box prices and coverage come from our current catalogue.

The spread is worth reading closely. The 8mm boxes hold 16.55 sq ft for $59.00, so they come in at $3.56 per sq ft. Greige Oak matches that box price but covers only 11.82 sq ft, which lifts it to $4.99 per sq ft. Across the whole 20mil group in our catalogue, boxes run $59.00 to $62.00 and material runs $3.56 to $4.99 per sq ft, so these three sit at both ends of that range.

Reading the specs the way a wet floor does

  • Wear layer: 20mil on all three boards, listed as Commercial / Heavy Duty.
  • Thickness: 8mm in total on Driftwood Mist and Linen Fields (6mm SPC core plus the 2mm pad), 10mm on Greige Oak (8mm SPC core plus the 2mm pad).
  • Edges: all three install as click-lock planks, the same system the laminate below uses.
  • Water: each board carries a waterproof listing in our catalogue, so a wet boot and a damp mop are routine rather than a worry.
  • Width: the two 8mm boards are 7.09" wide planks; Greige Oak is a narrower 5.9" board.

Between the 8mm and the 10mm boards the choice comes down to the room. In a shallow front entry, the 8mm plank at $3.56 per sq ft keeps the material budget down and still carries the same 20mil surface. Where the mudroom is the main drop zone for a busy house and the floor runs along a wall of hooks and benches, the 10mm Greige Oak at $4.99 per sq ft gives you the thicker 8mm core under the same pad, at the cost of a box that covers only 11.82 sq ft.

How many boxes does a 60 sq ft entryway need?

Box maths is where small entryway jobs surprise people, because boxes do not come in fractions. Start with the floor area, add the 5% waste allowance built into every quote, then round up to whole boxes.

Take a 60 sq ft entry. Adding 5% for cuts brings the working area to 63 sq ft. Divide that by the coverage printed on the box and round up, and this is what each board needs.

Board Boxes for 63 sq ft Material cost Coverage ordered Cost per sq ft of floor
Riche Driftwood Mist 8mm SPC 4 boxes $236.00 66.20 sq ft $3.93
Riche Greige Oak 10mm SPC 6 boxes $354.00 70.92 sq ft $5.90

The 8mm board covers the entry with four boxes, which is 6.20 sq ft more plank than the floor itself and enough to absorb the cuts at the door frame and the closet. Greige Oak needs six boxes because each of its boxes is smaller, and it ends up with 10.92 sq ft over. On material alone, four boxes of the 8mm plank come to $236.00, and 13% HST brings that to $266.68; installation and delivery are not included and are confirmed at quote. The last column shows why small rooms cost more per square foot than the shelf price suggests: you pay for whole boxes, then spread the bill over the floor you actually cover.

Larger entries and hall runs

A longer front hall, or a mudroom that runs the width of a garage door, changes the box count. The method stays the same.

Floor area Driftwood Mist 8mm boxes Driftwood Mist 8mm material Greige Oak 10mm boxes Greige Oak 10mm material
100 sq ft 7 boxes $413.00 9 boxes $531.00
250 sq ft 16 boxes $944.00 23 boxes $1,357.00

Both sizes carry the same waste allowance, so a 100 sq ft hallway works out to 105 sq ft of board and a 250 sq ft run to 262.50 sq ft. As the area grows, the gap between the two boards widens in dollars, because Greige Oak's smaller box means more of them.

When laminate still makes sense

Swiss Krono Grey Oak (MV 803) is a 10mm laminate made in Germany and sold as AC5 Commercial Grade, priced at $42.83 per 17.22 sq ft box, which works out to $2.49 per sq ft. It clicks together the same way as the vinyl planks, in a 7 1/2" wide board. What it does not carry is a waterproof listing in our catalogue, and none of the 25 AC5 laminate SKUs does. Without that listing, nothing on the product record covers meltwater standing on the seams, which is why laminate stays out of the splash zone.

Laminate earns its place on the dry side of the entry instead: the back hall by a garage door that stays closed, a covered porch, or a boot room where the wet boots come off on a tray first. At $2.49 per sq ft it costs less than any of the 20mil SPC boards in the table above.

The same 60 sq ft room in Grey Oak takes 4 boxes for 63 sq ft, or $171.32 of laminate. Our quotes add underlay under laminate in full rolls of 200 sq ft at $50.00 a roll, so one roll covers this room and the material line becomes $221.32 before tax.

SPC vinyl vs laminate vs tile vs hardwood at the door

Four material families come up in entryway conversations. We carry three of them, which is what lets us put a number on those rows.

Option What our catalogue lists Wet-boot fit Material cost basis
Waterproof SPC vinyl 95 SKUs, all listed waterproof; 45 SKUs at 20mil The landing zone where boots come off $3.56 to $4.99 per sq ft for the 20mil boards
AC5 laminate 25 SKUs, none listed waterproof The dry side of the entry $2.39 to $3.59 per sq ft
Porcelain or ceramic tile Not in our catalogue A common entry floor, priced elsewhere No store price
Engineered hardwood 38 SKUs, all nail-down A dry foyer behind a mat $4.73 to $6.18 per sq ft
Solid hardwood 41 SKUs, none listed waterproof A dry foyer, with a mat at the door $4.99 to $9.99 per sq ft

Read the table by the third column first. Price only matters once the floor suits the spot, and the hardwood rows are nail-down floors aimed at rooms where water does not pool. If the entry is meant to make a statement rather than to survive boots, our statement entryway flooring ideas cover the design-led side of the same room.

Decision rules for a Toronto or GTA entry

  1. If boots land on the floor with snow still on them, choose a 20mil waterproof SPC board and watch the box count as closely as the price.
  2. If the entry is covered and stays dry, an AC5 laminate can cost less per square foot than 20mil SPC, as long as you budget for the underlay roll.
  3. If the new floor runs into the rest of the main floor, plan one transition and keep a single tone: our hallway flooring guide and kitchen flooring guide walk through both rooms.
  4. If the home is a condo, check the building's own rules on underlay and move-in access before ordering. Our condo flooring guide walks through that process.
  5. If the wet area is a bathroom or laundry room rather than an entry, the floor choice changes shape; our bathroom and laundry room flooring guide takes it room by room.

Entryway flooring FAQ for Toronto homes

Is vinyl or laminate better for a wet mudroom?

For the strip where boots actually land, vinyl. Every plank in our vinyl collection has a waterproof listing and our AC5 laminates do not, so the puddle test goes to SPC. Laminate is the cheaper way to cover a dry back hall, not the wet landing zone.

What does the flooring for a 60 sq ft entry cost?

With the 8mm Riche plank, the boards for that room cost $236.00 before tax and $266.68 with HST, spread over 66.20 sq ft of plank. The 10mm Greige Oak lands at $354.00 before tax for the same room. Installation and delivery are added when we confirm your quote.

Do SPC planks need a separate underlay?

Not for the three boards above. Each plank has its 2mm EVA pad pre-attached: the Greige Oak product page states no separate underlay required, and the Heavy-Duty pages describe the pad as an integrated underlayment.

How do I keep salt and grit off the finish?

Stop the grit before it reaches the planks. A coarse mat outside, a second mat inside and a boot tray catch most of what comes in, and a quick dry mop through the winter plus a damp cloth for the white salt film keeps the wear layer doing its job.

Should the entry floor match the rest of the main floor?

Running the same plank from the door into the hall makes a small entry read as part of the house rather than a separate patch. If you would rather make the doorway a feature, a different floor meeting a transition strip is the usual way to do it.
