Wide plank hardwood flooring is a solid-wood upgrade that transforms an entire home in a single installation — and this recent project in the GTA is a perfect example of what's possible. The Top Floorings Depot team supplied and installed wide plank light Oak hardwood throughout the main floor of this large two-storey home, covering the dining room, living room, hallway, and staircase landing. The result: continuous, light-toned floors that unify every room and flood the space with brightness.
The Project: Full Main-Floor Hardwood Replacement
This GTA home came to us with existing flooring that no longer matched the homeowner's vision. The scope included a full tear-out and replacement across the main level — a large open-concept layout spanning the dining room, formal living area, and connecting hallways. Running the same wide plank hardwood continuously through every room was the key design decision, eliminating the visual breaks that come from mixing flooring materials between spaces.
The flooring installed is a wide plank light Oak in an unfinished-look matte finish — wide boards with a clean, linear grain that reads as understated and contemporary. Installed using a nail-down method over the wood subfloor, these boards are locked in solid and built to last decades. The pale, neutral tone pairs naturally with the home's warm taupe walls and white trim, letting the architecture speak without the floor competing for attention.
Before: Tear-Out and Subfloor Prep
Before a single plank goes down, the existing floor has to come up — and on a project this size, that means a full demo day. The before photos show the scope clearly: hundreds of torn-up planks piled in the foyer and hallways, the subfloor exposed, and the grand curved staircase standing bare. Proper subfloor prep is non-negotiable on hardwood installations — any high spots, low spots, or moisture issues must be addressed before installation begins, or the floor will move, squeak, or fail prematurely. Our team handles this as part of every professional installation.
The Curved Staircase: Matching Hardwood to a Custom Feature
One of the most technically demanding parts of this project was the curved staircase. Grand staircases with curved railings, turned balusters, and bullnose treads require precise fitting and careful material selection to ensure the stair treads match the floor colour and grain seamlessly. In the mid-installation photos, you can see the bare maple staircase structure — all new solid wood components — being fitted alongside the new flooring. Matching your floors to your staircase is one of the most impactful things you can do for interior consistency, and it's a service Top Floorings Depot provides alongside our flooring supply. If you're planning a similar project in Markham, Richmond Hill, or Vaughan, contact us to discuss matching hardwood stair treads to your new floors.
The Result: Light, Open, and Unified
The finished photos say it all. The wide plank Oak runs wall-to-wall and room-to-room, creating a single continuous surface that makes the home feel larger and more cohesive. The matte light finish reflects natural light without glare, and the wide boards — each plank noticeably broader than standard strip flooring — give the space a modern, upscale look that narrow flooring simply can't achieve. Wide plank hardwood at 5" width or greater has been the dominant choice in GTA renovation projects for the past several years, and this install is a strong example of why.
