German laminate flooring dominates the Toronto market for one reason: it delivers real hardwood looks at a fraction of the cost, with build quality that handles Canadian winters and busy households. At Top Floorings Depot in Scarborough, we carry six brands — Egger, Krono Original, Kronotex, Kronoswiss, Swiss Krono, and Goodfellow — each with distinct strengths in thickness, AC rating, locking system, and price. This guide compares every brand we stock so you can choose the right floor for your GTA home or project.

What Does AC Rating Mean for Laminate Flooring?

The AC (Abrasion Class) rating is the single most important spec when comparing laminate brands. It measures durability on the EN 13329 European standard — the same standard used across all German and Swiss manufacturers. AC3 is suitable for moderate residential traffic. AC4 handles heavy residential and light commercial use. AC5 is rated for commercial spaces, high-traffic retail, and busy family homes. AC6 is the highest residential-commercial grade available, built for extreme wear including commercial installations, rental properties, and homes with large dogs.

At Top Floorings Depot, our laminate lineup starts at AC3 (Krono Original Brook Walnut) and goes up to AC6 (Swiss Krono 14mm Ultimate Grade). Most Toronto homeowners should aim for AC4 minimum if budget allows — it gives you noticeably better scratch and impact resistance than AC3 for a small price increase. AC5 and AC6 are worth the upgrade for busy households, rental units, pet owners, and anyone who wants their floor to look new for 15-20 years.

Brand-by-Brand Comparison: What Each Manufacturer Does Best

Not all laminate is created equal, even among German-made brands. Thickness, locking system, plank dimensions, and colour selection vary significantly between manufacturers. Here is how each brand we carry compares.

Egger — Precision German Engineering at Entry-Level Pricing

Egger laminate starts at $0.50/sqft — the lowest price point in our entire store. Made in Germany with Valinge locking, Egger offers two thickness tiers: 8mm AC4 and 11mm AC5. The 8mm AC4 line (1,292 x 193mm planks, 21.42 sqft/box) covers everyday residential needs at a price that makes whole-house renovations affordable. The 11mm AC5 line uses the same plank dimensions but with 16.15 sqft/box and a denser core for commercial-grade wear resistance.

Egger's colour palette leans toward natural oak and grey tones — understated finishes that work well in modern Toronto condos and open-concept homes. The Valinge click-lock system is reliable and forgiving for DIY installation. At under $0.70/sqft, Egger is the best value option for budget-conscious renovators who still want German-made quality underfoot.

Krono Original — Versatile Mid-Range with Wide Format Options

Krono Original (also Made in Germany) fills the mid-range gap between Egger's entry pricing and Swiss Krono's premium tier. The Krono Original lineup spans AC3 through AC5, with thicknesses from 10mm to 12mm. Prices range from $0.80/sqft to $1.69/sqft depending on the model.

Two Krono Original products stand out: the Brook Walnut 12mm AC3 at $1.09/sqft is one of our most affordable 12mm options — ideal for bedrooms and low-traffic areas. At the other end, the Brick Oak 12mm 7½" wide AC4 at $1.69/sqft offers the widest plank format in our Krono lineup, creating a more expansive look that mimics real hardwood.

Krono Original uses Valinge locking across all models. The 12mm x 5" standard planks offer a classic laminate profile, while the 7½" wide format options suit homeowners who want that wide-plank aesthetic without stepping up to engineered hardwood pricing.

Kronotex — Bold Colours and Extra-Wide Planks

Kronotex (Made in Germany) brings two things the other brands don't: extra-wide plank formats and bold colour options. Their 10mm AC5 line includes 9.61" x 72.64" extra-wide planks at $1.79/sqft — one of the widest laminate formats available in the GTA. The 12mm x 7.4" wide-long plank at $1.90/sqft is Kronotex's flagship, offering commercial-grade durability in a plank size that reads as real wood.

Kronotex pricing sits in the $0.70-$1.90/sqft range, competitive with Krono Original for similar specs. The extra-wide format is the differentiator — if you want wide-plank laminate that visually expands a small Toronto condo or gives an open-concept living area a high-end feel, Kronotex is worth the premium over Egger or standard Krono Original.

Kronotex also uses Valinge locking, and all their AC5 products meet the same EN 13329 commercial standard as the other German brands. The core is HDF (high-density fibreboard), consistent with all European laminate we carry.

Kronoswiss — Swiss Precision at Competitive Prices

Kronoswiss is the one non-German brand in our laminate lineup — manufactured in Switzerland with the same European quality standards. Kronoswiss offers 12mm laminate in AC4 and AC5 grades, priced from $0.80/sqft to $1.39/sqft. Valinge locking is standard across the range.

Kronoswiss occupies a sweet spot in our lineup: more affordable than Swiss Krono's premium tier but with higher AC ratings than Egger's entry-level options. The 12mm thickness provides solid underfoot feel and better sound dampening than 8mm alternatives — a real advantage in Toronto condos where noise transfer between units is a common complaint.

If you're comparing Kronoswiss to Krono Original at similar price points, the main trade-off is plank format selection. Kronoswiss offers fewer colour options but consistently strong build quality at every price level. For straightforward residential installations where you want a reliable 12mm floor without paying for premium branding, Kronoswiss delivers excellent value.

Swiss Krono — Premium AC6 for Maximum Durability

Swiss Krono is the top of our laminate range and the only brand we carry with AC6-rated products. Made in Germany, the 14mm Ultimate Grade line is the thickest, most durable laminate available at Top Floorings Depot. At 14mm with an AC6 rating, Swiss Krono handles commercial installations, high-traffic retail spaces, busy family homes with pets, and rental properties that take a beating.

Swiss Krono also offers a 10mm AC5 Commercial Grade line for homeowners who want commercial durability in a thinner profile. The Swiss Krono Chestnut 10mm AC5 and Swiss Krono Grey Oak 10mm AC5 are strong mid-range options at competitive pricing.

The flagship product in this lineup is Swiss Krono Witches Wood 14mm AC6 — a dramatic, dark-grained oak finish that has become one of our most requested laminate products. The 14mm thickness gives it a solid feel underfoot that rivals engineered hardwood, and the AC6 rating means it will resist scratches, impacts, and wear far beyond what AC3 or AC4 laminate can handle.

Goodfellow — European 12mm AC5 at a Mid-Range Price

Goodfellow rounds out our laminate selection with 12mm AC5 products made in Europe. Priced at $1.79/sqft, Goodfellow sits between Krono Original and Swiss Krono on the price scale. The 7⅞" x 48" plank format with Unifit locking gives you a wide-plank look without stepping up to the $1.90/sqft premium tier.

Goodfellow's AC5 rating means it handles the same level of traffic as Swiss Krono's 10mm AC5 line and Kronotex's AC5 products. The Unifit locking system is slightly different from the Valinge 5G system used by the German brands — it's reliable but not quite as widely tested across the industry. For residential installations in the GTA, it performs well.

Goodfellow's colour range includes warm naturals (Peking, Shanghai), rich darks (Canyon, Devine), and cool greys (Prag, Poznan). The Canyon colour is a popular choice for Toronto homeowners who want a warm, natural oak look with commercial-grade durability.

Thickness Comparison: 8mm vs 10mm vs 12mm vs 14mm Laminate

Laminate thickness affects three things: underfoot feel, sound transmission, and how level your subfloor needs to be. Thicker laminate feels more like real wood when you walk on it, dampens sound better (important in Toronto condos), and can bridge minor subfloor imperfections.

Thickness Brands Available Best For
8mm Egger Budget renovations, bedrooms, low-traffic rooms
10mm Krono Original, Kronotex, Swiss Krono Living rooms, condos, moderate traffic
12mm Krono Original, Kronoswiss, Kronotex, Goodfellow, Riche Whole-home installs, busy households, rentals
14mm Swiss Krono Maximum durability, commercial, high-traffic homes

For most Toronto homeowners, 12mm is the sweet spot — it's thick enough to feel solid, absorbs sound well, and is available across multiple brands at different price points. Step up to 14mm if you have large dogs, heavy foot traffic, or want the most dent-resistant floor available. The 8mm Egger options work well for budget-conscious projects in low-traffic areas.

Locking Systems: Valinge vs Unifit

Five of our six laminate brands use Valinge locking (Egger, Krono Original, Kronotex, Kronoswiss, and Swiss Krono). Goodfellow uses Unifit. Both are click-lock floating floor systems — no glue required, suitable for installation over concrete with a vapour barrier.

Valinge 5G is the industry standard for European laminate. It uses a fold-down mechanism with an audible click that confirms each plank is locked. The 5G Drop variant (used on some Riche SPC vinyl products) allows vertical insertion, which speeds up installation. For laminate specifically, the standard Valinge fold-down is the most common and most tested system in the world.

Unifit (used by Goodfellow) is a reliable click system that works well for residential installations. It uses an angled insertion method similar to Valinge's standard system. Both systems allow for floating installation over any flat subfloor — concrete, plywood, or existing flooring — as long as you use the appropriate underlayment.

If you're installing over concrete in a Toronto basement or condo, both systems perform identically when paired with a proper vapour barrier and underlayment. The choice between them matters less than making sure your subfloor is flat within 3mm over 2m, as required by all laminate manufacturers.

Pricing Tiers Across All Six Brands

Understanding the pricing landscape helps you match your budget to the right product. Here's how our laminate brands stack up by price range.

Price Range Brand/Model AC Rating
$0.50-$0.70/sqft Egger 8mm AC4, 11mm AC5 AC4–AC5
$0.70-$1.09/sqft Krono Original, Kronoswiss AC3–AC5
$1.09-$1.39/sqft Krono Original wide, Kronoswiss AC5 AC4–AC5
$1.39-$1.79/sqft Riche Toronto Collection, Kronotex wide, Goodfellow AC3–AC5
$1.79-$1.90/sqft Kronotex 12mm wide-long AC5

German-made laminate at Top Floorings Depot starts at $0.50/sqft — among the lowest pricing in the GTA for European-made flooring. Even our most expensive laminate (Kronotex 12mm wide-long plank at $1.90/sqft) costs less than the cheapest SPC vinyl we carry. If your primary goal is maximizing square footage per dollar while still getting a floor that looks like real hardwood, laminate is the clear winner.

Which Brand Should You Choose for Your Toronto Home?

The right brand depends on your priorities — budget, room type, traffic level, and visual preference. Here are our recommendations by scenario.

Best budget option for whole-home renovations: Egger 8mm AC4 at $0.50-$0.70/sqft. You can floor a 1,000 sqft condo for under $700 in materials. The AC4 rating handles normal residential traffic, and the Valinge locking makes DIY installation straightforward.

Best value for busy households: Kronoswiss 12mm AC5 at $0.80-$1.39/sqft or Goodfellow 12mm AC5 at $1.79/sqft. Both offer commercial-grade durability at a mid-range price point, with 12mm thickness for solid feel and sound dampening.

Best for maximum durability: Swiss Krono 14mm AC6 at the premium end. The AC6 rating is the highest available in laminate flooring — it resists scratches, dents, and wear better than any other option we carry. If you have large dogs, kids, or a high-traffic rental property, Swiss Krono AC6 is the laminate that will still look new five years from now.

Best wide-plank aesthetic: Kronotex 10mm extra-wide (9.61" x 72.64") at $1.79/sqft or Krono Original Brick Oak 12mm 7½" wide at $1.69/sqft. Wide planks make small Toronto condos feel larger and give open-concept spaces a modern, high-end look.

Installation Tips for German Laminate in the GTA

All laminate flooring at Top Floorings Depot installs as a floating floor over any flat subfloor — concrete, plywood, or existing flooring. For Toronto condos with concrete subfloors, use a vapour barrier (6mil poly) plus foam underlayment. For homes with plywood subfloors, foam underlayment alone is sufficient.

Key installation requirements that apply across all six brands: your subfloor must be flat within 3mm over a 2m span. In older Toronto homes (pre-1980), subfloor levelling compound is often needed before installation. Leave a 10mm expansion gap around all walls, pipes, and transitions — laminate expands and contracts with humidity changes, and Ontario's dry winters and humid summers create significant movement.

If you'd rather not install it yourself, we offer professional laminate installation starting at $1.50/sqft across the GTA. Our installation team handles subfloor prep, vapour barrier, underlayment, transitions, and baseboard — everything from delivery to finished floor.

Why Buy Laminate at Top Floorings Depot Instead of a Big Box Store?

Every product on our floor is available for same-day pickup at our Scarborough showroom, and our team can walk you through the differences between AC ratings, locking systems, and thickness options in person.

For contractors, we offer trade accounts with quantity discounts. Visit the showroom at 3781 Victoria Park Ave to set up your account.
