How to Fix Scratches on Vinyl Plank, Laminate and Engineered Hardwood

A scratched vinyl plank, laminate board or engineered oak floor is often a repair job rather than a replacement. See how to tell a surface mark from damage that goes through the top layer, and what each floor can take.

A scratch on vinyl plank, laminate or engineered hardwood can often be fixed where it is, but the right fix depends on which layer the mark has reached. Vinyl has a clear wear layer over a printed image, laminate has an abrasion layer over decorative paper, and engineered hardwood has a real wood top layer. A mark that stays in that top surface is a cleaning or touch-up job. A cut that goes through it means a new board on vinyl and laminate, and a sanding decision on engineered wood. The examples below include a plank from our vinyl plank collection.

Quick answer: can a scratch be repaired without replacing planks?

Yes, in most cases, as long as the damage sits in the surface. Drag a fingernail across the mark: a nail that glides over it suggests a scuff or shallow line, and a nail that catches suggests a cut. Then wipe the spot with a damp cloth and let it dry. Dirt and rubber scuffs tend to lift off, while a pale line that stays has usually broken the top layer.

  • Vinyl plank: scuffs wipe off with the right solvent, and a cut through the wear layer means a new plank.
  • Laminate: light scratches take the maker's repair filler, and a board with badly damaged decor is swapped out.
  • Engineered hardwood: minor scratches take touch-up products or a buff and recoat, and a full sand and refinish is recommended for deep ones.

Where the scratch sits on each type of floor

Each floor is built differently at the surface, and that decides how far a repair can go.

Vinyl plank: a printed layer under a clear wear layer

SURTECO, which makes print and wear layers for luxury vinyl, describes the wear layer as a transparent protective layer that safeguards the flooring against scratches, stains and abrasions, with the print layer carrying the wood or stone pattern. Our Riche Driftwood Mist plank is an 8mm SPC board with a 20mil wear layer over its oak-look print. Our range lists 95 vinyl planks, 45 of them carry that wear level, and 42 of those 45 are in stock today. A mark inside the clear layer is cosmetic, but once a cut reaches the print, nothing on the surface puts the pattern back.

Laminate: decorative paper under an abrasion layer

EGGER lists the parts of its laminate as an abrasion layer, decorative paper, high density fibreboard and a balancer paper, fused together under pressure and heat. The wood look is a printed paper, and the abrasion layer above it takes the wear. Our Egger EM7206 is an 8mm click-lock board, 7.60" wide. A light scratch in the abrasion layer can be filled, while a gouge that tears the decor paper leaves a pale line no cleaner will hide.

Engineered hardwood: real wood on top of several layers

The NWFA describes engineered wood floors as real wood made of multiple layers, with the top layer made of high-quality wood, and notes that they can be sanded and refinished, though not as many times as solid wood. Our Villa European oak is a wire-brushed, character-grade plank in a 7 1/2" width with a 3mm top layer, installed by nail-down. That top layer is all the wood a refinisher has to work with.

Prices and coverage for the three floors

These floors are sold by the box, so the per-square-foot figure is the box price divided by the coverage in the box. All three are in stock, which matters when a repair needs a matching board.

Floor Box price Coverage per box Material per sq ft Surface and install
Riche Flooring Heavy-Duty 8mm SPC Driftwood Mist $59.00 16.55 sq ft $3.56/sq ft 20mil wear layer, click-lock
Egger EM7206 laminate $40.48 21.42 sq ft $1.89/sq ft 8mm laminate, click-lock
Villa European Oak engineered plank $97.00 19.42 sq ft $4.99/sq ft 3mm oak top layer, nail-down

Prices checked October 6, 2026. Box prices and coverage come from our current catalogue.

The oak costs $3.10 per sq ft more than the laminate, and in repair terms that buys a real wood layer that can be sanded later. On the vinyl, protection comes from the clear layer rather than from wood depth.

How to fix scratches on vinyl plank flooring

Mannington's care guide for its ADURA PRO Rigid vinyl treats scuffs, marks and scratches as a cleaning task: wipe them with a clean, white cloth dampened with lighter fluid, painter's naphtha or isopropyl alcohol. It also warns that all three are flammable liquids, so follow the precautions on the container and check the care sheet for your own floor first.

  1. Sweep or vacuum first so loose grit does not drag across the plank.
  2. Dampen a clean white cloth with isopropyl alcohol, wipe the mark, and turn the cloth to a clean section as it picks up residue.
  3. Let the spot dry and look at it in daylight. A lifted scuff is finished, and a pale line that remains has gone into or through the wear layer.
  4. For a cut or a burn, limit traffic over it and cover it with masking tape, as Mannington advises for minor cuts and burns, while you decide on the next step.
  5. Replace the plank if the print is broken. A clear wear layer cannot be rebuilt in place, so a filler only disguises the cut.

The same guide asks for furniture protectors at least one inch in diameter, a rigid protective chair mat under rolling chairs, and strips of wood or hardboard runways when heavy furniture or appliances cross the floor.

How to fix scratches on laminate flooring

EGGER, the maker of our EM7206, gives a one-line answer: light scratches can be removed by using EGGER Decor Mix & Fill, the brand's own repair filler. Clean the area first: EGGER's cleaning guidance warns that unsuitable cleaning agents can leave layers that build up like a film and cloud the surface. Quick-Step, another laminate maker, draws the same line: light damage is repaired with a repair kit, while a badly damaged board has to be replaced. With no solid wood under the decor paper, sanding is not an option.

How to fix scratches on engineered hardwood

Engineered oak gives you more options because its surface is wood. The NWFA notes that touch-up markers, stain pens and furniture repair kits come in handy for minor surface scratches, and that a professional can help with bigger repairs. For some minor scratches and dings or a dull finish, it may be possible to simply buff and add a new coat of finish. A complete sand and refinish is its recommendation for deep scratches and dents, or a finish worn through to bare wood.

Sanding removes wood from the top layer, so save it for last. The NWFA lists the factors that decide how many times a floor can be sanded: the contractor's skill, the equipment, the thickness of the wear layer, and the flatness and condition of the floor. On a 3mm top layer, have a professional look before a sander touches it. Our hardwood scratch removal guide covers wood-specific techniques, the European oak care guide explains what dulls a finish, and the engineered hardwood cleaning guide sets out a routine that keeps grit off it.

Replacing a damaged plank instead of patching it

On a click-lock laminate floor, one board can come out of the middle of a finished room. Quick-Step's laminate instructions set out the sequence: mark the damaged board and tape off its outline, saw two parallel grooves along its middle with angled cuts at the ends, lift the pieces out with a chisel, glue the tongues of the surrounding boards, click in a trimmed replacement, and spread about 40 kg of weight over it while the glue dries. Nail-down engineered boards are held from below, so have an installer look before anything is cut.

A replacement only works with a matching board, so keep a spare box from the original order and note the product name on its label. When the damage covers several boards or a whole room has dulled, the question becomes refinishing or replacement. Our guide to refinishing versus replacing compares the two routes, and the flooring budget estimator turns room measurements into boxes of material.

How to keep the next scratch off the floor

Grit tracked in from outside does much of the damage on all three floors. Mannington's vinyl guide asks for doormats outside each entrance to stop dirt, sand and grit coming in, and a sweep at least once per week. EGGER recommends the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner for laminate. For wood, the NWFA advises protector pads under furniture legs and avoiding sports cleats and high-heeled shoes. Our guide to vacuums and mops for SPC vinyl covers the tools in more detail.

Frequently asked questions about scratched floors

Can I repair a scratch on vinyl plank or laminate without replacing planks?

Usually, yes. Scuffs and light lines on vinyl come off with the solvents named in the maker's care guide, and light laminate scratches take a repair filler. Replacement is for cuts that reach the print on vinyl or tear the decor paper on laminate, since neither layer can be rebuilt in place.

How do I tell a surface scratch from damage that goes right through?

Combine the fingernail test with a look in good light once the spot is clean and dry. No catch and a mark that fades point to surface wear. A groove that holds your nail, or a pale stripe where the pattern colour has gone, means the protective top layer has been breached.

Can you sand scratches out of laminate flooring?

No. EGGER builds its laminate from an abrasion layer over decorative paper on a fibreboard core, so there is no wood surface to sand back. Its route for light scratches is Decor Mix & Fill, and a heavily damaged board is replaced.

Will polish or wax hide scratches on vinyl plank?

Polish is not a repair for a cut. Mannington describes its ADURA PRO Rigid as a low-gloss floor and says to use polish or "mop and shine" products only if you wish to make the floor shiny.

Does a scratch-resistant floor stop all scratches?

No. Scratch resistance describes how well the top layer holds up, not a promise that it cannot mark. The Riche plank is listed with a Commercial / Heavy Duty durability rating and as waterproof, yet grit dragged under a chair leg can still mark it.

How do I find a replacement plank that matches my floor?

Start from the box label or your original order, because one colour name can come in more than one thickness or wear level. Send us the room size, a photo of the damage with a tape measure in frame, and a photo of the label, and we can check whether that exact product is still in stock.
