Buying Guide

Everything you need to choose the right floor — in three simple steps.

Step 01

Choose Your Thickness

Thickness determines durability and sound absorption. Thicker boards feel more solid and reduce noise.

  • 6–8mm: Budget-friendly, suitable for low-traffic areas
  • 10–12mm: Best for living rooms and bedrooms
  • 12mm+: Superior sound dampening, premium feel
  • Attached underlayment adds comfort and insulation
Step 02

Pick the Right AC Rating

AC (Abrasion Class) ratings measure wear resistance. Match the rating to your room’s foot traffic.

  • AC1–AC2: Light residential use
  • AC3: General residential — most popular
  • AC4: Heavy residential or light commercial
  • AC5: Heavy commercial foot traffic
Step 03

What is the difference between laminate and hardwood flooring?

Laminate is a synthetic product made of a high-density fiberboard core with a photographic layer and protective wear layer on top. Hardwood is milled from solid timber. Laminate costs significantly less, resists scratches better, and is easier to install, but cannot be refinished. Hardwood adds more resale value and lasts longer when well maintained.

Can laminate flooring be installed over radiant heat?

Yes — most modern laminate is compatible with radiant (underfloor) heating systems, but the surface temperature must not exceed 27°C (80°F). Always check the manufacturer's specifications. A floating installation method is recommended, and you should allow the floor to acclimate for at least 48 hours before installation.

How do I calculate how much laminate I need?

Measure the length and width of the room in feet and multiply to get square footage. Add 10% for standard rooms to account for cuts and waste, or 15% if you're installing on a diagonal. Order all material from the same batch to ensure colour consistency.

Is laminate flooring waterproof?

Standard laminate is water-resistant but not fully waterproof — prolonged exposure to standing water can cause swelling and warping. Many of our products feature enhanced water-resistant cores suitable for kitchens and bathrooms. Look for 'waterproof' in the product description, or ask our team for recommendations.

Do I need underlayment with laminate flooring?

Underlayment adds cushioning, sound reduction, and a moisture barrier between the subfloor and your laminate. Many of our laminate boards come with pre-attached underlayment. If yours does not, a separate 2–3mm foam or cork underlayment is recommended — do not double-layer if the board already has it attached.

How long does laminate flooring last?

Quality laminate flooring typically lasts 15–25 years in a residential setting. Lifespan depends on the AC rating, foot traffic, maintenance, and whether it was installed correctly. AC3-rated boards are suitable for most homes; commercial or high-traffic areas benefit from AC4–AC5.

What areas do you service for professional installation?

We offer professional installation services across Toronto, Scarborough, North York , Etobicoke, East York, Markham, Thornhill, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Mississauga, Brampton, Aurora, Newmarket, Stouffville, Woodbridge ,Maple, Unionville, King City, Oakville, Milton, Burlington, Georgetown, Caledon

How much does laminate flooring cost in Toronto?

At Top Floorings Depot, laminate flooring starts from $1.09 per sq ft on select in-stock options, with pricing varying by thickness, AC rating, brand, texture, and colour. Final project cost also depends on underlayment, transitions, baseboards, subfloor preparation, installation, and waste allowance.

What thickness of laminate flooring should I choose?

For most Toronto homes, 10mm to 12mm laminate gives a more solid feel underfoot than thinner budget options. 8mm can work well for bedrooms and lower-traffic areas, while 12mm and thicker laminate is better for main floors, rentals, and busy family spaces where sound, feel, and durability matter more.

What AC rating do I need for laminate flooring?

AC rating measures surface wear resistance. AC3 is suitable for regular residential rooms, AC4 is better for busy homes, hallways, rentals, and light commercial use, and AC5 is designed for heavier commercial traffic. For most GTA homeowners, AC4 is a strong balance of durability and value.

Is laminate flooring good for basements in Toronto?

Laminate can work in a dry basement with proper underlayment and moisture protection, but it is not the safest choice where water or humidity is a concern. For Toronto basements with any moisture risk, waterproof SPC vinyl plank is usually a better option because it will not swell from water the way laminate can.

Is laminate flooring good for homes with pets?

Yes, laminate can be a good pet-friendly flooring choice because the wear layer resists scratches better than many real wood surfaces. Choose AC4 or AC5 laminate for active pets, keep nails trimmed, and wipe spills or accidents quickly because laminate is water-resistant, not fully waterproof.

Can laminate flooring be installed over concrete?

Yes, laminate flooring can be installed as a floating floor over concrete if the slab is flat, clean, dry, and properly prepared. A suitable moisture barrier or underlayment is important over concrete, especially in condos and basements. Always check the flooring manufacturer's installation instructions before starting.

Can laminate be installed over existing flooring?

In many cases, laminate can be installed over existing vinyl, tile, or hardwood if the surface is flat, secure, dry, and clean. Soft flooring like carpet must be removed. Height changes at doors, stairs, kitchens, and transitions should be checked before ordering so the finished floor connects cleanly to nearby rooms.

How much does laminate flooring installation cost in Toronto?

Laminate installation cost in Toronto depends on room size, layout, subfloor condition, old floor removal, underlayment, baseboards, trims, stairs, and transitions. Simple floating-floor installs are usually more affordable than hardwood installation, but a proper quote should include the product, labour, prep, and finishing details so there are no surprises.
