Prefinished solid hardwood arrives with its colour already on it, so the useful question is not which stain you could pick but which tones are actually on the shelf. This guide sorts the 29 colours in our solid hardwood flooring collection that are in stock and photographed into six tone families, gives the live price for each, and flags where a colour name and its photo disagree. Red oak hardwood flooring stain colours make up the largest group at 17 of the 29, followed by maple and two white oaks.
Quick answer: the six tone families we stock
Across all 29 colours, prices run from $5.39 to $6.99 per sq ft before HST, and 16 of them sit at the top price of $6.99. The table shows how the colours group. Each family has its own section below with the colours, species and photos.
| Tone family | Colours in stock | Price per sq ft | Species |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural and pale | 4 | $5.39 to $6.99 | Red oak, maple |
| Honey, amber and gunstock | 6 | $6.99 | Red oak, maple |
| Chestnut and walnut browns | 6 | $5.49 to $6.99 | Red oak, maple |
| Grey and greige | 7 | $5.39 to $6.99 | Red oak, maple |
| White oak | 2 | $6.69 | White oak |
| Dark | 4 | $5.87 to $6.99 | Red oak, maple |
Prices checked October 4, 2026. Box prices and coverage come from our current catalogue.
How we sorted the colours, and where the names mislead
We grouped each colour by what its product photo shows rather than by what the name suggests, because names are an unreliable guide. MKB's Earl Grey red oak photographs as a very dark brown, not a grey. Lauzon's Smokey Grey maple shows a warm grey-brown, while Lauzon's Sapphir looks like the cooler grey of the pair.
Two limits apply. Screens and room light shift every stain, so use the photos to narrow the field rather than to make the final call. And 8 of the 37 solid hardwood boards currently in stock show a coming-soon placeholder instead of a photo, so they stay out of the tables below. Those eight include the lowest and highest prices among the in-stock boards, $4.99 and $9.99 per sq ft.
Every board in the tables is 19mm (3/4") thick and 4 1/4" wide, and every one lists nail-down as an installation method. If you are still deciding between the species themselves, our red oak, white oak and maple comparison covers that question, so here the focus stays on colour.
Honey, amber and gunstock: the warm golds
Six colours sit in the warm gold family, and all six are $6.99 per sq ft. Gunstock photographs as a rich golden brown with darker streaks. Honey leans copper-orange, Amaretto is a lighter tan-gold, and Madero is the plainest golden brown of the group. Auburn pushes furthest toward red.
| Colour | Brand and species | Price per sq ft | What the photo shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honey | Appalachian red oak | $6.99 | Amber with a copper cast |
| Amaretto | Appalachian red oak | $6.99 | Light golden tan |
| Amaretto | Lauzon hard maple | $6.99 | Smooth amber-orange |
| Madero | MKB red oak | $6.99 | Even golden brown |
| Gunstock | Appalachian red oak | $6.99 | Rich golden brown, darker streaks |
| Auburn | Appalachian red oak | $6.99 | Copper brown with a red tint |
Anyone searching for a honey oak floor should know that Honey reads more copper than yellow in its photo. For a lighter, more golden result, Appalachian Amaretto is the closer match. Gunstock is the choice when you want depth without going into the chestnut browns.
Chestnut and walnut browns: the flexible middle
Browns are where the same colour name shows up in two species. Treebark is $6.99 per sq ft in red oak and $5.49 in hard maple, a gap of $1.50, while Walnut is $5.50 in both. The photos look close but not identical, so check the exact board before assuming one can stand in for the other.
| Colour | Brand and species | Cost per sq ft | Look in the photo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treebark | Appalachian red oak | $6.99 | Deep chestnut brown, grain visible |
| Treebark | Appalachian hard maple | $5.49 | Medium brown, smoother surface |
| Walnut | Appalachian red oak, Advantage grade | $5.50 | Medium-dark brown, slight red |
| Walnut | Appalachian hard maple, Advantage grade | $5.50 | Medium-dark brown |
| Rosewood | Appalachian hard maple, Advantage grade | $5.50 | Dark reddish brown |
| Epicea | MKB red oak | $6.99 | Warm medium brown |
The Walnut and Rosewood boards carry an Advantage grade in the product title, while most other Appalachian colours are Prestige. Grade names are explained in our solid hardwood species, grades and finishes guide. For a plain warm brown without the red of Rosewood, MKB Epicea red oak is the one to look at.
Grey hardwood in stock: which colours actually read grey?
Grey (or gray) solid hardwood is narrower than the name suggests. In these photos most of our greys read as grey-brown rather than a flat cool grey. Lauzon's Sapphir and Limes are the coolest of the seven. Smokey Grey, Azaro, Safari, Latte and Sable all lean warm.
| Colour | Brand and species | Per sq ft | Tone in the photo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sapphir | Lauzon hard maple | $5.87 | Cool mid grey, smooth surface |
| Limes | Lauzon red oak | $5.39 | Grey-taupe with open oak grain |
| Smokey Grey | Lauzon hard maple | $5.87 | Warm grey-brown |
| Azaro | Lauzon hard maple | $5.99 | Soft taupe-brown, close to greige |
| Safari | Appalachian red oak | $5.99 | Mid grey-brown |
| Latte | Appalachian red oak | $6.99 | Deeper grey-brown |
| Sable | Appalachian red oak | $6.99 | Tan-brown with a grey cast |
Limes is the lowest-priced of the seven at $5.39 per sq ft. Choose Sapphir if grey is the goal, or Smokey Grey if you want a grey that sits comfortably beside warm furniture. The Lauzon colours are also compared with Appalachian's in our Lauzon vs Appalachian comparison.
White oak and natural tones: the pale end
Pale floors come from two places on our shelf. Appalachian Paisley and Poplin are the only white oaks we stock in solid hardwood, at $6.69 per sq ft each. The natural and Vela colours add four more light options in red oak and maple.
| Shade | Brand and species | Price per sq ft | Colour in the photo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paisley | Appalachian white oak | $6.69 | Soft grey-beige, mixed light and dark boards |
| Poplin | Appalachian white oak | $6.69 | Light sandy beige, faint grey |
| Natural | Appalachian red oak, Excel grade | $5.39 | Light gold with pink-orange variation |
| Natural | Appalachian hard maple | $6.99 | Pale cream, even |
| Vela | Lauzon red oak | $6.99 | Pale natural beige |
| Vela | Lauzon hard maple | $6.99 | Very pale grey-white |
Paisley is the more varied of the two white oaks, with lighter and darker boards mixed together, while Poplin is calmer and lighter. Both are $6.69 per sq ft, which is $0.30 below the $6.99 colours.
Dark solid hardwood: four deep tones
The dark family has four colours, and it is where the names mislead most. Jasper photographs as a charcoal brown and Medici as a deep espresso. Lauzon Graphite is a dark brown with a charcoal tone, priced at $5.87, which is $1.12 below the other three at $6.99. MKB Earl Grey is a very dark brown despite its name.
| Name | Brand and species | Cost per sq ft | Appearance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jasper | Appalachian red oak | $6.99 | Charcoal brown |
| Medici | Appalachian red oak | $6.99 | Deep espresso brown |
| Graphite | Lauzon hard maple | $5.87 | Dark brown, charcoal tone |
| Earl Grey | MKB red oak | $6.99 | Very dark brown |
Matching a colour to your room
- Limited daylight: pale and white oak tones such as Paisley, Poplin or Vela keep a room feeling lighter.
- Existing wood tones: if your stairs or trim are an orange-toned oak, either match the family (Gunstock, Honey) or contrast clearly with a grey or dark. Near-misses tend to look like a mistake.
- Grey is the goal: start with Sapphir or Limes, and move to Smokey Grey if you want the grey softened by warmth.
- Large, bright or open-plan rooms: dark tones such as Jasper or Medici have the space to carry a deep colour.
- Furniture that will change: mid browns such as Treebark and Walnut are the flexible middle ground.
- Tight budget: Limes and Appalachian Natural red oak are $5.39 per sq ft, and Treebark in hard maple is $5.49.
Does the stain colour change the price?
Not in a straight line. The same colour name can carry different prices, as Treebark shows above. Inside Appalachian red oak alone, the 12 colours run from $5.39 to $6.99 per sq ft. This table shows where all 29 colours fall.
| Price per sq ft | Colours |
|---|---|
| $5.39 | Natural red oak, Limes |
| $5.49 | Treebark hard maple |
| $5.50 | Walnut red oak, Walnut hard maple, Rosewood hard maple |
| $5.87 | Sapphir, Smokey Grey, Graphite |
| $5.99 | Azaro, Safari |
| $6.69 | Paisley, Poplin |
| $6.99 | The other 16 colours, including Gunstock, Honey, Auburn, Treebark red oak, Jasper and Earl Grey |
To see what the choice means in dollars, take a 300 sq ft room. Add 5% for cuts and waste (300 x 1.05 = 315 sq ft), divide by the coverage of one box, round up to whole boxes, then multiply by the box price.
| Colour | Box price and coverage | Boxes | Material before HST |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walnut red oak | $103.95 per 18.9 sq ft | 17 | $1,767.15 |
| Sapphir | $99.80 per 17.0 sq ft | 19 | $1,896.20 |
| Gunstock | $132.11 per 18.9 sq ft | 17 | $2,245.87 |
Gunstock comes to $478.72 more than Walnut for the same room, $2,245.87 against $1,767.15. Installation, removal and HST are extra: our hardwood flooring price guide builds them in, and our lower-cost solid hardwood picks cover the budget end.
Solid hardwood colour FAQ
What colour is gunstock hardwood flooring?
In our product photo, Appalachian Gunstock red oak shows amber tones with darker streaks running through the grain. It is $6.99 per sq ft, the same price as Honey, Auburn and the other warm golds.
Do you have grey hardwood floors in solid wood?
Yes. Seven of the 29 photographed colours are grey or grey-leaning, priced from $5.39 per sq ft for Lauzon Limes to $6.99 for Appalachian Latte and Sable. For the coolest tone, look at Sapphir and Limes and treat the others as warm greys.
Is there a white or very light solid hardwood?
The palest photos belong to Lauzon Vela in hard maple, a very pale grey-white, and Appalachian Poplin white oak, a light sandy beige. Poplin is $6.69 per sq ft and Vela is $6.99.
Do darker stains cost more than lighter ones?
Not in the current range. The four dark colours run from $5.87 to $6.99 per sq ft, and the four natural and pale colours run from $5.39 to $6.99, so shade alone does not predict the price.
Can I rely on the product photo to judge colour?
Use it to shortlist, not to decide. Screens and room light change how any stain looks, and a name like Earl Grey can describe a very dark brown. Confirm the tone in person before you order.
What does honey oak look like in your range?
Appalachian Honey red oak photographs as amber with a copper cast rather than a pale yellow. A lighter golden tan is closer to Appalachian Amaretto red oak.
