Kronotex Laminate Review: 9.61in Extra-Wide AC5 Planks, and How Swiss-Made Kronoswiss Compares

What the Kronotex AC5 laminate line offers, including the extra-wide 9.61 in planks, and how our two Kronoswiss options compare on price, thickness and box size.

Kronotex sells AC5 laminate in planks wider than anything else in this range, and the obvious question is whether the extra width is worth paying for. In short: at $2.99 per sq ft, the four 9.61 in Kronotex planks we stock cost less per square foot than the 12mm Kronotex codes or Kronoswiss CR3217, and they come in the largest box of the nine laminates covered here. This Kronotex laminate review is built from our live catalogue (prices, coverage per box, thickness, the AC label and the origin printed on each listing), not from wear tests. It then sets our two Kronoswiss laminates beside the Kronotex line so you can see where each one fits. All of them sit in our laminate flooring collection.

Quick answer: is the extra-wide Kronotex plank worth it?

  • Choose the 9.61 in Kronotex if you want a wide board with AC5 on the label at $2.99 per sq ft. The four codes (4792, 4793, 4796 and 4798) are priced and packed identically, so colour is the only deciding factor.
  • Choose a 12mm board if you prefer the thicker profile: the two 12mm Kronotex codes are $3.09 per sq ft, and Kronoswiss CR3217 is $3.59 per sq ft.
  • Choose on budget with Kronotex Harbour Oak D3570 (AC5, $2.39 per sq ft) or Kronoswiss D3040 (labelled AC4, $2.29 per sq ft).
  • Colour is the one thing a table cannot settle. Screen photos shift, so ask us about seeing the plank in person before you commit to a full order.

What we stock from Kronotex and Kronoswiss, side by side

Kronotex has seven SKUs in our catalogue, all labelled AC5 and all in stock, priced from $2.39 to $3.09 per sq ft. Kronoswiss has two SKUs, both in stock, from $2.29 to $3.59 per sq ft. The origin in the table is the one printed in each product name: Germany on every Kronotex listing and Switzerland on both Kronoswiss listings.

Group Codes Label Thickness Origin printed Box price Sq ft per box Per sq ft
Kronotex, 9.61 in 4792, 4793, 4796, 4798 AC5 10mm Germany $57.92 19.37 sq ft $2.99
Kronotex, 12mm 2999, 3178 AC5 12mm Germany $46.13 14.93 sq ft $3.09
Kronotex Harbour Oak D3570 AC5 10mm Germany $33.44 13.99 sq ft $2.39
Kronoswiss CR3217 AC5 12mm Switzerland $51.45 14.33 sq ft $3.59
Kronoswiss D3040 AC4 12mm Switzerland $32.44 14.17 sq ft $2.29

Prices checked October 4, 2026. Box prices and coverage come from our current catalogue, and the per sq ft column is the box price divided by the square feet in the box.

One note on widths: the 9.61 in figure is the width in the product name and description. The separate width field on the product pages lists a different number, so if a doorway, transition or wall-to-wall layout depends on the exact plank width, ask us to confirm it before you order.

The 9.61 in Kronotex planks: four codes, one spec

Codes 4792, 4793, 4796 and 4798 share the same specification: 10mm thick, AC5 on the label, click-lock installation method on the product pages, $57.92 per box and 19.37 sq ft in each box. Since nothing in the numbers separates them, treat this as a colour choice and pick the shade that suits your room. The listing for 4798 is our lead example below.

Kronotex 4798 at $2.99/sq ft

The box size shows up quickly once you start counting. A 19.37 sq ft box covers more floor than any of the other boxes in the table, so a typical room needs fewer cartons: on the 400 sq ft example further down, the 9.61 in boards take 22 boxes where the 12mm Kronotex codes take 29.

10mm or 12mm: what the price tells you

The wide boards are 10mm, while the two other Kronotex lines in 12mm cost $3.09 per sq ft. That means you are not paying a premium for width: the wider plank is $0.10 per sq ft less than the thicker one. Whether two extra millimetres of thickness matters to you depends on your subfloor and how the floor feels underfoot, and our guide to laminate thickness walks through that trade-off.

Choosing between 4798 and 4796

Both codes cost the same, so the photos are the real comparison. Code 4798 is a dark grey oak look, while 4796 leans towards a warm, light brown oak with visible knots.

Photos on a screen run lighter or darker depending on the display, so use them to narrow the list to two colours and make the final call in person.

Kronotex in 12mm, and the Harbour Oak entry point

The two 12mm Kronotex codes, Kronotex 2999 and 3178, are the top of the Kronotex range at $3.09 per sq ft. Each box is $46.13 and holds 14.93 sq ft. They make sense if you have decided on 12mm and want to stay within the Kronotex name.

At the other end, Harbour Oak D3570 is the entry point: AC5 label, 10mm, $33.44 per box, 13.99 sq ft per box and $2.39 per sq ft. That is $0.60 per sq ft less than the 9.61 in boards. The catch is the smaller box. Covering the same 400 sq ft room takes 31 boxes of Harbour Oak against 22 of the wide planks, but the material still comes out lower: $1,036.64 against $1,274.24, a gap of $237.60 before HST.

Kronoswiss: the Switzerland-labelled pair

We carry two Kronoswiss laminates, and they are not alike. CR3217 is labelled AC5, 12mm, Made in Switzerland, at $51.45 per box of 14.33 sq ft, which works out to $3.59 per sq ft. D3040 is labelled AC4, 12mm, Switzerland, at $32.44 per box of 14.17 sq ft, or $2.29 per sq ft.

CR3217 against the wide Kronotex

Both are AC5 on the label, so the differences are thickness (12mm against 10mm), origin (Switzerland against Germany) and price. CR3217 is $0.60 per sq ft higher. On the 400 sq ft example it takes 30 boxes for $1,543.50, which is $269.26 more in material than the 22 boxes of the 9.61 in boards. The listings do not claim a performance gap beyond those labels, so the extra money buys the thicker profile and the Swiss origin, not a rating upgrade.

D3040 against Harbour Oak

These two sit within $0.10 per sq ft of each other: $2.29 for D3040 and $2.39 for Harbour Oak. The trade is AC4 and 12mm on one side, AC5 and 10mm on the other. D3040 is the thicker board for less, while Harbour Oak carries the AC5 label for $0.10 more. Our AC rating explainer covers what each class means so you can match it to the room.

What 400 sq ft costs in boxes

To make the boxes comparable we used the same scenario for every product: a 400 sq ft floor. The steps are the ones we use for quotes. Add 5% for cuts and waste (400 sq ft plus 5% is 420 sq ft), divide by the square feet in a box, round up to whole boxes, and multiply by the box price.

Product Sq ft per box Boxes for 420 sq ft Material before HST
Kronotex, 9.61 in 19.37 sq ft 22 $1,274.24
Kronotex, 12mm 14.93 sq ft 29 $1,337.77
Kronotex Harbour Oak D3570 13.99 sq ft 31 $1,036.64
Kronoswiss CR3217 14.33 sq ft 30 $1,543.50
Kronoswiss D3040 14.17 sq ft 30 $973.20

Two details are worth noticing. Harbour Oak needs 420 ÷ 13.99 = 30.02 boxes, so a sliver of floor pushes you to a 31st box, and those 31 boxes cover 433.69 sq ft. For the 9.61 in boards, 13% HST on $1,274.24 adds $165.65, for $1,439.89 in material with tax. Installation, underlay, trim and delivery are not in these figures; we price them separately in a quote once we know the room and the subfloor.

Small rooms behave differently, because a big box rounds up to a bigger leftover. For a 150 sq ft room, adding 5% gives 157.5 sq ft. That is 8.13 boxes of the 9.61 in boards, so you buy 9 boxes for $521.28 and end up with 16.83 sq ft more than the room needs. Harbour Oak needs 11.26 boxes, so 12 boxes at $401.28, leaving 10.38 sq ft over. The wide planks still cost $120.00 more in material here, but the spare planks are worth keeping in a closet for future repairs.

How to choose between them

  • Wide boards with AC5: the 9.61 in Kronotex codes at $2.99 per sq ft. Pick by colour, since 4792, 4793, 4796 and 4798 are otherwise the same.
  • 12mm and AC5 with the Swiss label: Kronoswiss CR3217 at $3.59 per sq ft, the highest per sq ft of the nine.
  • AC5 on a tighter budget: Harbour Oak D3570 at $2.39 per sq ft, remembering that the smaller box means more of them.
  • Smallest material outlay: Kronoswiss D3040 at $2.29 per sq ft, with the AC4 label to weigh against the room it is going into.

Going broader than these two names? Our Egger, Kronotex and Swiss Krono comparison sets the three brands side by side, while the all-brands comparison adds the rest of what we carry. Kronotex and Kronoswiss laminate FAQ

Do you sell Kronotex laminate in Toronto?

Yes. Seven Kronotex SKUs are in our catalogue, each carrying the AC5 label and each in stock as of October 4, 2026, with prices from $2.39 to $3.09 per sq ft. Browse them in the laminate collection, or contact us if you want a specific code checked before you plan a project.

How much flooring is in a box of the 9.61 in Kronotex?

Each box holds 19.37 sq ft and costs $57.92, which is $2.99 per sq ft. To find your box count, add 5% to your floor area, divide by 19.37 and round up.

What is the difference between Kronotex and Kronoswiss?

On our listings, Kronotex is printed as Germany and Kronoswiss as Switzerland. In our range the Kronoswiss pair is 12mm: one AC5 at $3.59 per sq ft and one AC4 at $2.29 per sq ft. The Kronotex line spans 10mm and 12mm, all AC5, from $2.39 to $3.09 per sq ft.

Is Kronotex a good laminate brand?

We have not wear-tested these floors, so this page judges them on what the listings state: an AC5 label on all seven Kronotex codes, 10mm or 12mm thickness and a click-lock installation method. For a decision about durability, match the AC label to the room and look at the plank in person.

Do I need underlay, and how are these planks installed?

The product pages list click-lock as the installation method for all nine. Underlay depends on the subfloor and on any rules in your building, so we confirm it when we put together your quote.
