How Many Square Feet Are in a Box of Flooring? Coverage and Price per Box by Product Line (11.82 to 23.64 Sq Ft)

One box of flooring can cover anywhere from 11.82 to 23.64 sq ft of SPC vinyl, so the box price alone cannot tell you the cost per sq ft. Here is coverage, box price and whole-box counts for each line.

How many sq ft of flooring in a box depends on the line, and the price on a listing is the price of a carton, not of a square foot. In our current catalogue one box covers 11.82 to 23.64 sq ft of SPC vinyl, 13.24 to 21.42 sq ft of laminate, 19.42 or 20.24 sq ft of engineered oak and 17 to 20 sq ft of solid hardwood. That is why a $59.00 box works out to $4.99 per sq ft in one vinyl line and $2.77 in another. Below are coverage and box price for every line, then whole-box counts and the real cost per sq ft for a 500 sq ft floor. If you still need your room's square footage, begin with our guide to measuring a room for flooring; the vinyl figures come from our vinyl flooring collection.

How many sq ft of flooring in a box? The short answer by type

This table summarises every catalogue product by type, with the number in stock in brackets.

Flooring type Products (in stock) Sq ft per box Box price Price per sq ft
SPC vinyl 95 (87) 11.82 to 23.64 $59.00 to $69.99 $2.66 to $5.08
Laminate 60 (58) 13.24 to 21.42 $18.25 to $69.99 $1.33 to $4.54
Engineered hardwood 38 (35) 19.42 to 20.24 $95.71 to $120.00 $4.73 to $6.18
Solid hardwood 41 (37) 17 to 20 $91.63 to $169.83 $4.99 to $9.99

Prices checked October 4, 2026. Box prices and coverage come from our current catalogue and are before 13% HST.

The last two columns are the ones to watch. SPC vinyl boxes all sit between $59.00 and $69.99, yet the cost per sq ft inside that band runs from $2.66 to $5.08.

Same box price, different coverage

Cost per sq ft is the box price divided by the sq ft in the box, so a $59.00 box holding 11.82 sq ft costs $4.99 per sq ft. Three pairs from our catalogue show how far that can move while the shelf price stays put:

  • $59.00 SPC vinyl boxes: 11.82 sq ft in the 10mm line ($4.99 per sq ft), 16.55 sq ft in an 8mm line ($3.56) and 21.27 sq ft in a thinner line ($2.77).
  • $40.48 Egger laminate boxes: the EM7206 (8mm) covers 21.42 sq ft at $1.89 per sq ft, while the EM7208 (11mm) covers 16.15 sq ft at $2.51 per sq ft.
  • $99.80 Lauzon solid hardwood boxes: the Hard Maple Sapphir covers 17 sq ft at $5.87 per sq ft, while the Beech Cape Cod covers 20 sq ft at $4.99 per sq ft.

In each pair the lower cost per sq ft belongs to the box that holds more, even though the price on the shelf is identical.

SPC vinyl: seven box sizes in one price band

Our 95 SPC vinyl products fall into seven coverage groups. Each group shares one coverage figure.

Sq ft per box Products (in stock) Box price Price per sq ft Thickness Wear layer
11.82 25 (24) $59.00 $4.99 10mm 20mil
13.79 16 (14) $62.00 to $69.99 $4.50 to $5.08 9mm 12mil
14.18 10 (8) $62.00 $4.37 9mm 20mil
15.77 14 (11) $59.00 to $63.08 $3.74 to $4.00 8mm 12mil
16.55 10 (10) $59.00 $3.56 8mm 20mil
21.27 10 (10) $59.00 $2.77 see product page 12mil
23.64 10 (10) $62.93 $2.66 6mm 12mil

Read the first column against the thickness column. The 10mm planks come in 11.82 sq ft boxes, the 9mm planks in 13.79 and 14.18 sq ft boxes, the 8mm planks in 15.77 and 16.55 sq ft, and the 6mm planks in 23.64 sq ft. Within our SPC range, thinner planks mean more sq ft per box. A 6mm box covers twice what a 10mm box does for only $3.93 more.

Wear layer does not tell you the price per sq ft on its own. The 12mil 9mm boxes priced at $69.99 come to $5.08 per sq ft, which is more than the 20mil 10mm line at $4.99, because 13.79 sq ft is all that carton holds.

The 6mm Blonde Sand Oak line sits at the other end of the table: $62.93 per box and 23.64 sq ft, so $2.66 per sq ft. Its spec field lists it as waterproof, and the product title names an attached IXPE pad.

Laminate, engineered and solid hardwood box sizes

Laminate: twenty box sizes

Laminate comes in the largest number of carton sizes. Our 60 laminate products use 20 different coverages between 13.24 and 21.42 sq ft, with box prices from $18.25 to $69.99. That works out to $1.33 to $4.54 per sq ft, so comparing boxes alone tells you very little.

Engineered hardwood: two box sizes

Engineered oak comes in 19.42 sq ft and 20.24 sq ft boxes. The Slate board is a 20.24 sq ft box at $95.71, or $4.73 per sq ft. The other 19.42 sq ft boxes cost $97.00, which is $4.99 per sq ft, or $120.00, which is $6.18 per sq ft. The Slate box costs $1.29 less than a $97.00 box and covers more, so its cost per sq ft is lower.

Solid hardwood: three box sizes

Solid hardwood boxes hold 17, 18.9 or 20 sq ft. Box prices run from $91.63 to $169.83 and the cost per sq ft from $4.99 to $9.99, a $5.00 spread that is wider than in the other three categories. A 17 sq ft box is the smallest solid carton, which is why the Lauzon Hard Maple Sapphir needs more boxes for a given area than a 20 sq ft line.

A 500 sq ft floor, box by box

Here is the material arithmetic our quote calculator uses, applied to five featured products. Installation, underlay and trim are separate lines; our Toronto flooring cost guide shows how they add up by material.

  1. Add the 5% waste allowance: 500 sq ft × 1.05 = 525 sq ft.
  2. Divide by the sq ft per box and round up to a whole box.
  3. Multiply the boxes by the box price to get the material cost.
  4. Divide the material cost by 500 sq ft to see what each sq ft of finished floor costs.

For rooms that need more than the 5% used here, see our guide to ordering extra flooring for waste.

Product Sq ft per box Box price Shelf price per sq ft Boxes for 525 sq ft Material cost Cost per sq ft of floor
Greige Mist 10mm SPC vinyl 11.82 $59.00 $4.99 45 $2,655.00 $5.31
Blonde Sand Oak 6mm SPC vinyl 23.64 $62.93 $2.66 23 $1,447.39 $2.89
Slate European oak engineered 20.24 $95.71 $4.73 26 $2,488.46 $4.98
Egger EM7206 laminate 21.42 $40.48 $1.89 25 $1,012.00 $2.02
Lauzon Hard Maple Sapphir solid 17 $99.80 $5.87 31 $3,093.80 $6.19

Greige Mist in 10mm needs 45 boxes because each holds only 11.82 sq ft, so its material comes to $2,655.00. Blonde Sand Oak in 6mm needs 23 boxes for $1,447.39, a difference of $1,207.61 for the same 500 sq ft at nearly the same box price. Slate engineered oak and Lauzon solid hardwood land at $2,488.46 and $3,093.80, and the Egger laminate at $1,012.00 for 25 boxes.

Why the cost per sq ft of floor is above the shelf price

Greige Mist lists at $4.99 per sq ft but costs $5.31 across the 500 sq ft floor. The gap has two parts: the 5% waste allowance, which means you buy for 525 sq ft, and whole boxes, since a carton cannot be split. Greige Mist's 45 boxes cover 531.90 sq ft, which is 6.90 sq ft past the 525 sq ft target, while Blonde Sand Oak's 23 boxes cover 543.72 sq ft, which is 18.72 sq ft past it. A larger box is not a worse deal, but its final carton can hold more than you need.

How many boxes for 200, 500 or 1,000 sq ft?

Box counts rise with area, but not evenly, because every count is rounded up. This table applies the same 5% allowance and whole-box rule to 200 sq ft, 500 sq ft and 1,000 sq ft.

Product Sq ft per box 200 sq ft 500 sq ft 1,000 sq ft
Greige Mist 10mm SPC 11.82 18 45 89
Blonde Sand Oak 6mm SPC 23.64 9 23 45
Slate engineered oak 20.24 11 26 52
Egger EM7206 laminate 21.42 10 25 50
Lauzon Hard Maple Sapphir 17 13 31 62

For 1,000 sq ft the target is 1,050 sq ft. That is 89 boxes of Greige Mist at $5,251.00 or 45 boxes of Blonde Sand Oak at $2,831.85, a $2,419.15 difference. If you would rather enter your own room size, our square footage calculator guide covers the steps.

Small rooms: the last box matters more

A 120 sq ft room needs 126 sq ft with the 5% allowance. In 23.64 sq ft boxes that is 6 cartons ($377.58) covering 141.84 sq ft, so 15.84 sq ft is left over. In 11.82 sq ft boxes it is 11 cartons ($649.00) covering 130.02 sq ft, leaving 4.02 sq ft. The bigger box still costs less overall, but it is the one that leaves more floor unused.

Thickness, wear layer and install method: the other numbers on the listing

Coverage is one of several spec fields stored for each product. These are the fields for the five featured products.

Product Thickness Wear layer or top layer Install method
Greige Mist 10mm SPC 10mm 20mil wear layer Click-lock
Blonde Sand Oak 6mm SPC 6mm 12mil wear layer Click-lock
Slate engineered oak 19mm 2mm oak top layer Nail-down
Egger EM7206 laminate 8mm Not listed Click-lock
Lauzon Hard Maple Sapphir 19mm Solid wood (Hard Maple) Nail-down

The spec fields for Greige Mist and Blonde Sand Oak both mark them as waterproof, and the Greige Mist durability field reads 20mil - Commercial / Heavy Duty. Installation is priced separately from the boxes; our flooring installation cost guide lists what each flooring type costs to fit.

Choosing a line by cost per sq ft, not box price

  • Budget first: compare cost per sq ft, then check the box count for your area. In our SPC range the 6mm line is $2.66 per sq ft and the 10mm line is $4.99.
  • Same box price on two listings: check the sq ft per box before treating them as equal.
  • Small room: a smaller carton lets you land closer to the area you need, as the 120 sq ft example showed.
  • Real wood: engineered oak runs $4.73 to $6.18 per sq ft and solid hardwood $4.99 to $9.99, so compare them on cost per sq ft rather than box price.

Questions about flooring box coverage and price

How many square feet are in a box of vinyl plank flooring?

It depends on the line. Our SPC vinyl cartons run from 11.82 sq ft in the 10mm line to 23.64 sq ft in the 6mm line, with five groups in between.

How many square feet come in a box of laminate flooring?

Between 13.24 and 21.42 sq ft across our range, spread over 20 box sizes. For 200 sq ft that means 10 boxes of the Egger EM7206 but 14 of the Egger EM7208.

How much is a box of hardwood flooring?

Solid hardwood boxes in our catalogue cost $91.63 to $169.83 and engineered oak boxes $95.71 to $120.00. Because the boxes hold different amounts, the figure to compare is cost per sq ft: $4.99 to $9.99 for solid and $4.73 to $6.18 for engineered.

How many boxes of flooring do I need for 1,000 square feet?

Add 5% and you are buying for 1,050 sq ft. That is 89 boxes of Greige Mist, 45 of Blonde Sand Oak, 52 of the Slate engineered oak, 50 of the Egger EM7206 and 62 of the Lauzon Hard Maple Sapphir.

How many extra boxes of flooring should I keep?

Boxes are sold whole, so the last carton leaves some floor over before any deliberate spare. In the 500 sq ft examples that surplus ran from 1.24 sq ft (Slate engineered oak) to 18.72 sq ft (Blonde Sand Oak) past the 525 sq ft target. Whether to keep it as repair stock is your call, and our waste guide covers how much to add for waste.
