Choosing between grey and greige vinyl planks comes down to two decisions: the tone you want underfoot and the wear layer you are paying for. Our vinyl flooring collection holds 95 Riche vinyl planks, and this page covers 15 of them that read as grey or greige in their product photos. Some carry a 12mil wear layer and the rest a 20mil one, so we sort every colour by that split and turn each live box price into a price per square foot.
Colour trends, styling and paint pairings are covered elsewhere on our blog, so we keep this page to the planks themselves. If you want the style discussion first, start with our grey flooring buyer's guide or our look at greige across every material, then come back here to choose a specific plank.
Quick answer: which grey or greige vinyl plank should you buy?
Start with tone, then check the wear layer. Here is the short version, based on how each plank looks in its product photo:
- Light, cool grey: Cool Ash Grey, Harbour Grey, Silver Mist Oak and Misty Grey Oak.
- Mid grey: Weathered Grey Oak, Stone Grey Oak and Taupe Grey Oak, which leans a little warmer than the other two.
- Warm greige: Greige Mist and Silver Whisper are pale and soft, while Greige Oak and Coastal Greige are deeper taupe tones.
- Dark charcoal: Smoky Timber and Anthracite Oak, plus Dusk Greige Oak, which looks darker than its name suggests.
- Wear layer: the 12mil colours suit bedrooms and quieter rooms; the 20mil colours are labelled Commercial / Heavy Duty and suit busy floors.
12mil or 20mil: how the grey and greige range splits
Each product record lists a wear level. In this range the 12mil colours are labelled Residential and the 20mil colours are labelled Commercial / Heavy Duty. The two groups also differ in thickness and price, which the tables below put side by side. Tone descriptions come from the product photos rather than the colour names. Some photos are manufacturer swatches, some show a physical sample and some are room scenes, so treat each description as a starting point and compare the plank against your own paint and cabinets before you order.

20mil grey and greige SPC planks (Commercial / Heavy Duty)
| Colour name | Tone shown | Plank thickness | Box price and size | Cost per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Misty Grey Oak | light grey | 9mm | $62.00 for 14.18 sq ft | $4.37 |
| Greige Mist | pale warm greige | 10mm | $59.00 for 11.82 sq ft | $4.99 |
| Silver Whisper | pale greige with a warm cast | 10mm | $59.00 for 11.82 sq ft | $4.99 |
| Greige Oak | warm brownish taupe | 10mm | $59.00 for 11.82 sq ft | $4.99 |
| Stone Grey Oak | mid cool grey | 10mm | $59.00 for 11.82 sq ft | $4.99 |
| Smoky Timber | dark charcoal with brown | 10mm | $59.00 for 11.82 sq ft | $4.99 |
| Anthracite Oak | near-black charcoal | 10mm | $59.00 for 11.82 sq ft | $4.99 |
Put the tables side by side and the pattern is clear. The 12mil group runs from $2.66 to $5.08 per sq ft, and price climbs with thickness: the 6mm planks are $2.66, the 8mm planks are $3.74 or $4.00, and the 9mm planks are $4.50 or $5.08. The 20mil group is far tighter. 6 of its 7 colours are 10mm at $4.99 per sq ft, and Misty Grey Oak is 9mm at $4.37. Within 20mil, price will not separate the colours, so tone decides.
One price breaks the pattern. Coastal Greige is a 12mil plank at $5.08 per sq ft, which is $0.09 more than the 20mil colours at $4.99. If you want a warm greige and the floor will see daily traffic, Greige Oak gives you the heavier wear layer for slightly less.
For a closer comparison, take Weathered Grey Oak and Misty Grey Oak, two grey oak-look planks. Moving from the $3.74 Weathered Grey Oak to the $4.37 Misty Grey Oak adds $0.63 per sq ft. In return you get 9mm instead of 8mm and a 20mil wear layer instead of 12mil. Misty Grey Oak is also lighter, so part of that gap buys a different tone as well.
Choosing a tone: light grey, mid grey, warm greige or charcoal
Grey vinyl planks do not all pull in the same direction. Some lean cool, some sit close to neutral and some carry brown undertones that edge toward greige. Reading the photos in the two tables, the range falls into four groups.
Light cool greys: Misty Grey Oak, Cool Ash Grey, Silver Mist Oak and Harbour Grey
These are the planks for a bright, airy look. Cool Ash Grey and Harbour Grey are 12mil colours at $3.74 and $4.50 per sq ft, and Silver Mist Oak shows a more pronounced grain texture in its photo. Misty Grey Oak is the light grey in the 20mil group, which makes it the one to look at for a pale floor in a kitchen or hallway that sees heavy use. Its listing photo is a living room scene, which helps you judge how the floor reads next to light furniture.
Warm greiges: Greige Mist, Silver Whisper, Greige Oak and Coastal Greige
Greige Mist and Silver Whisper are both 10mm planks at $4.99, in boxes of 11.82 sq ft at $59.00, and both read pale and warm in their photos. Despite the name, Silver Whisper looks closer to a pale greige than to a silver grey. Hold each one against your wall colour to see which undertone sits better. If you are weighing soft, light floors like these against a bleached oak look, our white-washed vs natural oak comparison shows how the two oak looks differ in a GTA home.
Greige Oak and Coastal Greige are deeper. In its photo Greige Oak reads as a warm taupe-brown, and Coastal Greige shows as a medium taupe in a room scene. Greige Oak is the 10mm option at $4.99 per sq ft with a 20mil wear layer; Coastal Greige is 9mm with a 12mil wear layer.
Charcoal tones, and when a colour name does not match its photo
Smoky Timber and Anthracite Oak are the dark end of the range. Smoky Timber reads as a charcoal with brown in it, and Anthracite Oak looks close to black-grey. Both are 20mil colours at $4.99 per sq ft. Dusk Greige Oak is the one to look at twice. Its name says greige, but its photo reads as a dark neutral grey with little warmth. That makes it a fit for a charcoal look at $2.66 per sq ft, and a poor fit if you expected a warm beige-grey. Check the photo instead of the name, and see the colour in person where you can.
What 400 sq ft of material costs at 12mil and 20mil
Box prices hide how much floor you buy, because each plank comes in a different box size. This example covers a room of 400 sq ft. Adding the 5% waste allowance we use in our quotes gives 420 sq ft. Divide that by the coverage of one box, round up to whole boxes, then multiply by the box price.
| Colour | Wear layer | Coverage per box | Boxes for 420 sq ft | Material before HST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dusk Greige Oak | 12mil | 23.64 sq ft | 18 | $1,132.74 |
| Weathered Grey Oak | 12mil | 15.77 sq ft | 27 | $1,593.00 |
| Coastal Greige | 12mil | 13.79 sq ft | 31 | $2,169.69 |
| Misty Grey Oak | 20mil | 14.18 sq ft | 30 | $1,860.00 |
| Greige Oak | 20mil | 11.82 sq ft | 36 | $2,124.00 |
Weathered Grey Oak (12mil) comes to $267.00 less in material than Misty Grey Oak (20mil) over the same room. Among the greiges the lower wear layer saves nothing: Coastal Greige (12mil) costs $45.69 more than Greige Oak (20mil), because its $69.99 box price outweighs its larger coverage of 13.79 sq ft. Installation, removal, trim and delivery are quoted separately, and 13% HST is added to the total of your order.
Which wear layer fits which room
There is no single right answer, but a few rules keep the choice simple:
- Bedrooms, offices and guest rooms: 12mil is the natural fit, and it opens up the entry-priced colours such as the 6mm Dusk Greige Oak and Taupe Grey Oak.
- Kitchens, hallways and entries: choose a 20mil colour such as Misty Grey Oak or Greige Oak. For kitchen-specific points, see our waterproof LVP guide for kitchens and main floors.
- Homes with pets and children: the heavier wear layer is worth a look here too, since those floors take daily scuffing.
- Rentals and light commercial space: the 20mil group is the one labelled Commercial / Heavy Duty. Confirm the intended use with us before you order a floor for a business.
- Tight budgets: compare the 8mm 12mil colours such as Weathered Grey Oak at $3.74 before stepping up.
Thickness and pad matter too. The product titles for Cool Ash Grey, Weathered Grey Oak, Greige Oak, Misty Grey Oak and Smoky Timber mention an attached EVA pad, and the Dusk Greige Oak and Taupe Grey Oak titles mention an IXPE pad. Not every title states a pad, so check the product page. Our guide to SPC specs and underlayment explains what to ask before you buy.
