A basement hangout room asks a lot of its floor. People stand for hours at the bar, chairs slide back from the screen, a glass tips over, and all of it sits on a concrete slab. Most basement rec room flooring ideas come down to that mix, and the floor we would point you to first is SPC vinyl plank with a pad bonded to the back. It clicks together as a floating floor, and the bonded layer gives the room a softer footing than a bare click board. We carry 95 SPC vinyl products; 60 of them name a pad in the product title, and 53 of those 60 are in stock, so you can sort by thickness and colour in our SPC vinyl plank collection. This page sticks to the entertainment room itself. If your question is about moisture, subfloors or renovation order, our basement renovation flooring guide is the better starting point.
Quick answer: what floor suits a basement bar or theatre room
- Start with a padded SPC plank. Our product titles list an IXPE pad on the 6mm and 6.5mm lines and an EVA pad on the 8mm, 9mm and 10mm lines, so the cushion arrives already attached to the board.
- Match the wear layer to the traffic. Our product records class a 20mil wear layer as commercial or heavy duty and a 12mil wear layer as residential, which is the clearest dividing line in the range for a room with a bar and a screen in it.
- Compare box coverage, not just box price. Padded lines in our catalogue run from 11.82 sq ft to 23.64 sq ft per box, so two boxes at the same price can cover very different floor areas.
- Plan for waste. Our quote formula adds 5% to the measured area before it counts boxes, and a 400 sq ft rec room becomes 420 sq ft once that allowance is in.
- Budget material first, then services. Installation, removal and trim are priced on your quote; the box maths below covers boards and HST only.
Why a pad bonded to the plank matters in an entertainment room
Standing weight collects in one place at the bar, stools get dragged, and hard soles cross the same path to the screen every night. A pad bonded to the back of the plank does not change how the surface wears, but it does change how the floor feels and sounds underneath you. The pages for our heavy-duty 8mm boards describe a 2mm high-density EVA pad attached to each plank and name a cushioned feel underfoot and sound reduction as the reasons it is there.
The pad also changes what you do not have to buy. A plank with the cushion bonded on needs no roll of underlayment laid out first, which is one less line on the quote and one less layer to get wrong on site. The 10mm Greige Oak line shows this most plainly: the pad is part of the plank title, and the product page states that no separate underlay is required. On lines where the pad is described only in the page copy rather than the title, confirm the build for the colour you choose before you order.
Which padded SPC lines suit a rec room
These four in-stock boards run from a heavy-duty 8mm board to the thickest padded option. Each per sq ft figure is the box price divided by the box coverage.
| Product | Build | Plank | Wear layer | Box price and coverage | Per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Driftwood Mist or Linen Fields, heavy-duty 8mm | 8mm total, 6mm core plus 2mm EVA pad | 7.09" wide | 20mil | $59.00 per 16.55 sq ft box | $3.56 |
| Greige Oak, 10mm with EVA pad | 10mm total, 8mm core plus 2mm EVA pad | 5.9" wide | 20mil | $59.00 per 11.82 sq ft box | $4.99 |
| Pacific Teak, 9mm | 9mm total, 7mm core plus 2mm EVA pad | 5.9" wide | 12mil | $69.99 per 13.79 sq ft box | $5.08 |
Prices checked October 6, 2026. Box prices and coverage come from our current catalogue.
The two heavy-duty boards in the first row share one box price and one coverage figure, so the choice between Driftwood Mist and Linen Fields comes down to colour rather than budget. Material across the four runs from $3.56 to $5.08 per sq ft. Moving up that scale buys extra thickness or a different colour family; it does not buy a thicker wear layer, since Pacific Teak at the top of the price range carries 12mil.
Plank width is the other number worth reading in that table. The two heavy-duty 8mm boards are 7.09" wide, while Greige Oak and Pacific Teak are 5.9" wide. A wider plank puts fewer long seams across a big open basement, and a narrower one can suit a long, narrow room where the boards run lengthwise.
How the four boards differ in practice
- Driftwood Mist and Linen Fields. Both are heavy-duty 8mm boards with a 20mil wear layer and a 2mm EVA pad, priced at $59.00 a box for 16.55 sq ft. The difference between them is the colour.
- Greige Oak. The thickest board of the four at 10mm total, built from an 8mm core with a 2mm EVA pad on the back, in a grey-beige tone that sits between warm and cool rooms.
- Pacific Teak. A 9mm board with a 12mil wear layer, which our records class as residential, in a warm teak tone at $69.99 for each 13.79 sq ft box.
What a 400 sq ft rec room costs in boxes
A 400 sq ft rec room is the example used throughout this page. Follow the same steps our quote tool uses and you can reproduce every number below on a calculator:
- Add the waste allowance. Waste-adjusted area = 400 sq ft × 1.05 = 420 sq ft.
- Count whole boxes. Boxes = waste-adjusted area ÷ sq ft per box, rounded up. Part boxes are not sold, so the last box is a full one.
- Price the boards. Material = boxes × box price.
- Add tax. HST at 13% goes on the material line. Installation, removal and delivery are quoted separately and are not included here.
| Board for the room | Boxes for 420 sq ft | Material | HST 13% | Material with HST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Driftwood Mist or Linen Fields, 16.55 sq ft per box | 26 boxes | $1,534.00 | $199.42 | $1,733.42 |
| Greige Oak, 11.82 sq ft per box | 36 boxes | $2,124.00 | $276.12 | $2,400.12 |
| Pacific Teak, 13.79 sq ft per box | 31 boxes | $2,169.69 | $282.06 | $2,451.75 |
Coverage per box drives the box count more than the price per box does. The same room takes 26 boxes of the 16.55 sq ft board but 36 boxes of the 11.82 sq ft Greige Oak board, which is why the 10mm option lands $590.00 higher in material even though both boxes cost the same.
Wear layer, thickness, and how the room sounds
The wear layer is the part of the plank that takes keys, stool legs and pet claws. In a rec room where furniture moves and people stand at a bar, a 20mil board is the safer specification, while a 12mil board can still work in a room that is mostly a quiet theatre with soft seating. The Greige Oak 10mm plank, at $59.00 a box covering 11.82 sq ft, is one of the 20mil options, and it is the board we would show first to a household planning a busy bar corner.
Total thickness is a separate question from the wear layer. The 8mm heavy-duty boards are a 6mm core with a 2mm pad, Pacific Teak is a 7mm core with a 2mm pad, and Greige Oak is an 8mm core with a 2mm pad. The Greige Oak page credits its 10mm build with a more solid feel underfoot and improved coverage of subfloor imperfections, which is worth weighing in an older basement where the slab has small dips.
Noise is the other half of a basement room. The product pages for our heavy-duty 8mm boards and for the 9mm Pacific Teak board publish the same pair of acoustic figures, IIC 73 and STC 72, and the 8mm pages tie that sound reduction to the bonded pad. Those numbers come from the product copy, so read them as the stated ratings for those two lines and not as a promise about your own ceiling assembly. If the room sits under a bedroom, the sound path through the floor structure matters too, which is the subject of our guide to SPC vinyl noise and hollow sound. In a multi-unit building, check your building's own rules before you order; our condo flooring guide explains where those requirements come from.
Planning around a bar, a screen or a pool table
Each zone of a rec room asks something different of the floor:
- At the bar. Standing traffic and dropped glasses make a 20mil wear layer on a click-lock board a sensible pairing. All 95 SPC products in our catalogue are listed as waterproof in their product records, which covers the spilled-drink side of a bar.
- Around the screen. Felt pads under recliners and sofas help limit scuffing from the daily slide back and forth.
- Pool table or gym gear. Heavy equipment is mostly a question of how the load is spread. Our home gym flooring guide sets out the base floor plus dedicated mats approach for the same kind of basement room.
- Under everything. A slab that is uneven, damp or covered in old adhesive changes the job. Subfloor preparation is priced after viewing, and the wider basement questions are covered in our complete basement flooring guide.
If the room leans more toward a warm, dark bar than a pale theatre wall, the Pacific Teak 9mm board at $69.99 per box carries a bonded EVA pad and the same published acoustic figures, in a teak colour with a 12mil wear layer.
Questions homeowners ask about a basement rec room floor
What kind of floor stands up to a basement rec room with a bar?
Look for an SPC vinyl plank with a 20mil wear layer and a pad bonded to the back. Our records label the 20mil surface commercial grade, and the bonded pad softens the footing without a separate underlayment.
Does SPC vinyl need underlay in a basement?
Not on the 10mm Greige Oak line: the EVA pad is named in its title, and its product page rules out a separate underlay. The heavy-duty 8mm and Pacific Teak pages also describe a pre-attached pad, and the 8mm pages call theirs integrated underlayment. Confirm the build for the colour you pick before ordering.
How much material does a 400 sq ft recreation room take?
After the 5% waste allowance the area is 420 sq ft. That works out to 26 boxes of a 16.55 sq ft board, 36 boxes of an 11.82 sq ft board or 31 boxes of a 13.79 sq ft board, with material between $1,534.00 and $2,169.69 before HST.
Is 12mil enough for a rec room, or should I pay for 20mil?
For a bar with stools, standing guests and dropped objects, 20mil is the spec we would choose. Three of the four example boards carry it, two of them at $3.56 per sq ft. A 12mil board suits a quieter theatre room where the traffic is mostly soft seating.
Will a hard floor make my home theatre sound hollow?
A floating floor over a slab can sound hollow, especially in a room with few soft furnishings. A pad bonded to the plank, an area rug and upholstered seating all help, and our noise guide goes through the causes in more detail.
Can SPC vinyl go straight over a basement slab?
Click-lock SPC floats, so it is not glued or nailed to the slab. We look at the slab before quoting, and any levelling or repair it needs is priced after viewing rather than per square foot.
