Buying Guide

Everything you need to choose the right floor — in three simple steps.

Step 01

Choose Your Species & Grade

Species and grade determine the floor's colour, grain, hardness, and natural variation.

  • Red oak: classic GTA hardwood look with strong value
  • White oak: clean, modern grain and premium design appeal
  • Hard maple: dense, smooth, and great for busy living areas
  • Grade affects colour variation, knots, mineral marks, and overall consistency
Step 02

Pick Width, Colour & Finish

Board width, stain colour, gloss level, and surface texture change how the finished room feels.

  • 3 1/4 inch boards: traditional hardwood look for smaller rooms and classic homes
  • 4 1/4 inch boards: wider, cleaner look while staying stable for solid wood
  • Natural and medium tones hide dust better than very dark glossy floors
  • Semi-gloss and textured finishes help balance style, durability, and maintenance
Step 03

Confirm Room, Install & Quantity

Solid hardwood performs best when the room, subfloor, humidity, and order quantity are planned before installation.

  • Best for above-grade living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and hallways
  • Use over plywood or OSB subfloors; avoid basements and high-moisture rooms
  • Keep indoor humidity stable and acclimate flooring before installation
  • Measure length x width, add about 10% for cuts and waste, and plan trims and transitions

What is solid hardwood flooring?

Solid hardwood flooring is milled from a single piece of real wood from top to bottom. Unlike laminate or vinyl, it is not a printed surface. It can be sanded and refinished multiple times, which is why solid hardwood remains one of the longest-lasting flooring choices for Toronto and GTA homes.

How much does solid hardwood flooring cost in Toronto?

At Top Floorings Depot, solid hardwood flooring currently starts from $5.39 per sq ft on select in-stock options, with price varying by species, grade, width, finish, and availability. Final project cost also depends on installation, subfloor preparation, stairs, transitions, baseboards, and waste allowance.

What is the difference between solid hardwood and engineered hardwood?

Solid hardwood is one piece of wood all the way through and can usually be refinished more times over its life. Engineered hardwood has a real wood top layer over a multi-layer core, making it more stable for concrete subfloors, condos, and some radiant heat applications. Solid hardwood is best for dry, above-grade rooms with plywood or OSB subfloors.

Can solid hardwood be installed in a basement?

No. Solid hardwood is not recommended for below-grade basement installations in Ontario because concrete moisture and humidity can cause cupping, gapping, swelling, or warping. For basements, waterproof SPC vinyl plank is usually the safest option, while engineered hardwood may work in some dry below-grade spaces with the right product and installation method.

Can solid hardwood be installed over concrete?

Solid hardwood is usually not installed directly over concrete. It is normally nailed or stapled to a wood subfloor such as plywood or OSB. If your home has a concrete slab or condo subfloor, engineered hardwood or SPC vinyl plank is usually the better category to consider.

Which hardwood species is best for my home?

Red oak is a classic and cost-effective choice for many GTA homes. White oak has a cleaner, more modern grain and premium design appeal. Hard maple is dense and smooth, making it popular for busy living areas. Walnut offers rich colour but is generally softer and more premium. The best species depends on your room, style, budget, and traffic level.

What does hardwood flooring grade mean?

Hardwood grade describes the natural appearance of the boards, including colour variation, mineral streaks, knots, and overall consistency. Cleaner grades look more uniform, while character grades show more natural variation. Grade is mostly about appearance, not whether the wood is good or bad.

Should I choose 3 1/4 inch or 4 1/4 inch solid hardwood?

A 3 1/4 inch board gives a traditional hardwood look and works well in smaller rooms or older Toronto homes. A 4 1/4 inch board feels wider and more updated while still being practical for solid wood. Wider solid hardwood can move more with humidity, so room conditions and installation quality matter.

Can solid hardwood flooring be refinished?

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of solid hardwood is that it can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its life. This lets you remove surface scratches, refresh the finish, or change the stain colour later. The exact number of refinishes depends on board thickness, wear, and previous sanding.

Does solid hardwood need to acclimate before installation?

Yes. Solid hardwood should acclimate in the installation space according to the manufacturer's instructions before it is installed. The home should be enclosed, climate controlled, and kept at normal living conditions. Stable humidity is important because solid wood naturally expands and contracts with seasonal changes.

Is solid hardwood good for homes with pets?

Solid hardwood can work in homes with pets, but it is real wood and can scratch. Harder species, lighter colours, lower-sheen finishes, and textured surfaces tend to hide wear better. Keep pet nails trimmed, use mats at entrances, and avoid standing water from bowls or accidents.

How much extra hardwood should I order, and do you deliver in the GTA?

Measure each room's length x width and add about 10% extra for cuts, waste, and future repairs. Add more for angled layouts, closets, stairs, or complex rooms. Top Floorings Depot offers showroom pickup and GTA delivery, including Toronto, Scarborough, North York, Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Mississauga, and nearby areas.
